Catholic Bible: Revised Standard Version

Excellent text, excellent binding, worth every penny.
The Holy Bible RSV Catholic Second Edition (RSV 2nd CE), is an updated RSV text, and is a cousin to the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV).This NRSV takes liberties with the text, and in places departs from a translation, and offers instead a gender neutral text, often pluralising a singular text so it can be rid of the male pronoun ‘he’.For example Psalm 1:1-2 NRSV; “Happy are those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or take the path that sinners tread, or sit in the seat of scoffers; but their delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law they meditate day and night.”Thankfully the RSV 2nd CE is faithful to the Hebrew text; “Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night.”.Fathers are expunged from the NRSV text; e.g. Proverbs 13:1; “A wise child loves discipline, but a scoffer does not listen to rebuke” (There is a footnote providing the missing text). In the RSV 2nd CE no such footnote is required, again it is faithful to the Hebrew; “A wise son hears his father’s instruction, but a scoffer does not listen to rebuke.”In Isaiah 7:14 the Hebrew word “Alma” (literally ‘young maiden’ with the meaning of maidenhood i.e. a virgin) is rendered in the RSV of 1952, and the NRSV as “young woman” which leaves the matter open as to whether the referent is a virgin or not.The RSV 2nd CE restores the translation to ‘virgin’. This is the meaning understood by the Jews when translating the Hebrew Old Testament into Greek, centuries before our Lord was born. They used ‘parthenos’ – Greek for Virgin. The RSV 2nd CE has modernized the English without giving way to being politically correct and imposing on the text words which are not found in the original language, so it is a faithful translation, and whilst all translations are imperfect in one way or another, it has striven to be loyal to the Hebrew and Greek text, by both gender and numeric agreement. Both the Hardback version and the Leather bound version are lovely books – professionally printed and bound. One might say both are of superior bindings and a pleasure to own and use. Worth every penny.

Stunning leather bible.
Stunning leather bible in every respect and a worthy investment in my faith journey. The leather is very high quality, the pages bound very well with no spine crunching or creating. The paper is a light buttery yellow and the text readable (although took getting used to admittedly, as I wasn’t so familiar with this typeface) The size is ideal, not to big or small, and the gold gilding and two ribbons is a welcome bonus. I am surprised with how much readable and not too small a text the makers fitted into a bible that’s pages are also quite thick…it almost defeats logic or at least my usual understanding of what the payoffs are with bible sizes and page thickness, so a real gem. It’s easily one of the most special bibles I’ve owned, or even held, and am most sincerely impressed. But as with any Bible, beautiful or not, the most important factor is reading it - and I must say, it’s splendour is an encouragement! Highly recommended.

if there is a ‘best’?
Saying something is the best of its kind is fraught with potential problems, but what I will say is that this is the best bible I have ever used. Pretty much all versions are beautiful in one way or another, and it is, of course, personal preference, but for me, this is the one. I have this kindle version, the 2500 page large print hardback and the compact version for my bag so I am never without one. Buy this. You won’t regret it.

A Brilliant lectionary (Bible)
Hello I am Ryan Trundle, I'm a Catholic and a father of three; living in Liverpool England Uk.I have got a lot of Bibles and I have read a lot more from The Jewish translation to the King James version and many more but I know the majority of the New Testament and therefore it didn't make a difference to me if the word's was 'And he Spake unto them' or if it just said 'And He said to them'. Well this I will say the New Bible the RSV2 is very good. Now I do admit to being a complainer when the parables aren't in the bible in entirety. I believe yes the parables should be a section in the bible rather than only being in the teachings of the old and new testaments (we can't have everything I suppose.) But never the less. The font is crystal clear and the pages are of a good GSM (meaning you can't read ten pages through one.) This edition has been well condensed but it hasn't lost the love. I have spotted the occasional misplaced word but it does not affect the bible in any way. I would recommend this version of the bible. All Catholics and Christians should have a copy of this version. I do miss the Manasseh Prayer it is nice to read. Judith is in full. (Judith I am not your enemy!) I do love the fact that the Apocrypha is included in near fullness Amazing. Now the best part of this bible is that it is direct and I have read direct translations from the scriptures and it is near the same from 2000 plus years ago to modern day now without the oldie worldie snare that truly isn't needed. If you want the Truth as the truth then this bible is for you. Love it like it loves you.Thank you for reading.

Very good item at a good price.
This bible is well worth the price. My first order came with a little bit of the gold edge worn off the pages but my second order came back in perfect condition. If you want this particular bible It will be hard to find in the shops because it is an American publisher. The size and weight of the bible is just right for me and I like the subtle off white pages. The bible is real leather and the colour is brown, a trick of the light in photographs. The gold edged pages are also a nice touch. Because it is a catholic bible there are the added books and there are some good maps at the back. It is worth mentioning that if you wish to purchase this leather version enter 'catholic bible leather' in the amazon search engine. All in all an excellent item.

Must have bible
I hesitated for a few months to buy this bible because - do I really need another bible? I was in search of a portable Catholic Bible that I could see (I am blind as a bat) and was bigger than the 6 or 7 size font available. I settled on the GNT Catholic Bible which is a great bible, excellent font and cute pictures but it was too thick to carry. So I bit the bullet and went with this bible after noticing the number of pages was less than the "portable" GNT Catholic Bible. This Bible does not disappoint. The leather is nice, the font is clear and crisp - absolutely readable and I like the creamy colored paper. The paper is thicker than most bibles which is nice. It is very portable so I can bring it with me everywhere I go. I love it!

Way better than expected! Highly recommended
I own many Bibles, and this is easily one of the best in my collection now. I own a couple Cambridge Bibles that are only a bit nicer quality than this and they cost me 2-3x more! The paper quality is very nice and the leather is soft and flexible. In addition, the gold page gilding looks great and I like having 2 ribbons. The Bible was printed in the USA which surprised me for the low price range. This Bible is not super portable in size, but it's not as heavy as I expected either. It makes an excellent study & prayer Bible and it's not filled with too much commentary or notes. The RSV-CE 2nd Ed translation is excellent. Very readable, not as politically correct like the NRSV. It re-affirms Catholic dogmas/beliefs and makes excellent textual clarifications on many key verses in the scriptures (Luke 1:28, Isaiah 7:14, etc). You also get all of the Catholic books and traditional ordering of the books and Psalms and any removed chapters have been included (ex: chapters from Book of Daniel). The only thing I wish this Bible had would be a section or pages that included common prayers. This would have been nice for devotional reasons, but it's not the end of the world. I would recommend that every reader learn "Lectio Divina" and you will love this Bible for sure.Overall, I would highly recommend this Bible. It's simple and no frills. The full Catholic OT & NT with a brief introduction and minimal commentary/notes throughout so you can really focus on the scriptures. It is really as good as it gets if you just want a pure Catholic Bible!

Great Bible 👍
I got this as a study bible and it's good for personal reading and biblical study. This version uses Formal equivalence translation(Word for Word translation) and it is a must have if you're interested in Bible Study and want a more literal meaning of the Scriptures from the original language.A Good must have Bible for everyone!

Good quality
I'm very happy with the quality and how pretty the cover is, the pages are quite thin as expected from a book this size. I enjoy reading it a lot (plus it has that nice "new book" smell)
