how do you care for a self healing rotary cutting mat?

Just alittle tip for everyone.... iam a full time professional artist and Bookbinder, so needless to say .. I use ALOT of extremely sharp Japanese skiving knives, knives, rotary cutters, hobby blades and scalpel. If I cut deeply or leave a nice gash in my mat..... I just run my bone folder back and forth over it, pressing down. It takes them right out.

How are these mats packaged for shipping? I have a delivery person in my area who is not always very careful.

If I remember correctly, it was in a big flat cardboard package the size of the mat but stiff. I've never had any problems with amazon packaging.

Do you need to have a mat big enough for the whole piece you are cutting? If not, how do you deal with cutting larger items and not cut your table?

For this size mat, if you are cutting a large quantity of fabric where the whole pattern is larger than the mat you would use it the same as cutting the fabric w/o a mat, roll up the material to continue laying the pattern, after it is all laid out then cut/rotary cut each pattern piece.

I had an Olfa cutting mat and the smell of the mat was present after 1 week. How does this mat compare? Any special tricks used to fight this?

It compares favorably with other brands of cutting mats as far as 'healing' of any cutting marks. I think the smell of the material used in this mat will eventually disappear. Because I live in a condo with limited storage space, I push my Olfa mat under our queen-sized bed for storage, so that probably helped with the odor from the mat. As you know, you can't fold or roll these mats or they become distorted & you would have problems when cutting your fabrics, etc. Hope this helps.
