Jane Eyre: A Norton Critical Edition
Charlotte Bronte's 'Jane Eyre', first published in 1847 and with its famous sentence "Reader, I married him", is a novel that hardly needs an introduction and one that has captivated readers from its original publication (Charlotte Bronte's publisher, George Smith, spent the entire day reading her manuscript and wouldn't retire to his bed until he had finished reading it) right up until the present time. With many of the essential ingredients for the successful romantic novel and many of the salient tropes for gothic fiction, 'Jane Eyre' also includes themes of religion, morality, social class, feminism, gender relationships and more - and, as such, can be read, enjoyed and discussed again and again. However, one of the main purposes of this review is talk about the Norton Critical Edition of this novel which I bought for a young friend who is studying this, and although I have several copies of 'Jane Eyre' and would gladly have lent her one of these, I do not have one with the amount of support material that the Norton Critical contains. In addition to explanatory footnotes this edition contains 150 pages of additional material and includes: 'Early Writings and Diaries'; 'Home and Working Life'; 'Friendship and Love'; 'Writing Life'; 'Criticism' - which includes a piece by Virginia Woolf; and, of course, a chronology of the writer's life. Therefore, if you require an edition which gives background and context and has added explanatory footnotes, then this particular edition would be a good choice.5 Stars.

Spoiler!
They all die in the end. In a scene not unlike the ending of the Magnificent Seven, Rochester Hall is a scene of the utmost butchery. Somebody ought to make a film of it.

Uni is going well.
Item arrived in perfect condition, no issues. The novel is no longer in perfect condition though as I threw it out the window after finishing it. 😴

Ottima edizione!

Words almost escape me
I love classics but would not describe many of them as "page turners." Jane Eyre, however, is, in spite of the dull title and usually dull covers. Even the skeptical teenagers I teach loved this novel and came to class excited to talk about it. Several of the boys complained bitterly before reading it, and one continued to complain in between his astute and sometimes impassioned classroom observations, but it was clear his heart was no longer in his complaints. Because of my kids' reactions this has been as fun to teach as it has been to read (again). It might be the most perfect novel ever written.

Excellent Edition
Really wonderful inclusion of context before and letters after the story. Great size of book and decently sized printing. I was thrilled to see glosses.
