The Man Who Was Don Quixote; the Story of Miguel Cervantes Paperback – Import, 9 September 2021

I really liked this book. it is nicely pictured so even young readers can follow. Good job!

Don Quixote is remarkably easy reading in the Kindle version, without as many problems in the scanning of lists and other unusual column settings as I experienced with, for instance, Rabelais. The Kindle format seems ideal for moving through a classic like this.

If you can read any Spanish and you have a Kindle, take a leap and go for El ingenioso hidalgo don Quijote de la Mancha -- Don Quixote, in Spanish, improved 9/28/2010 (Spanish Edition). I have found no translation as rewarding as the original, even with my limited Spanish.Otherwise, this is a good choice. There is NO Active TOC (so minus one star), but the translator's excellent introductory material is included. As translators go, Ormsby seems to hew closest to the text (at least as far as I've gotten). There are translations with a more modern flavor, but either they are similar enough to this one as to make no difference, or they tear the author's voice to shreds by changing "registers" randomly and clumsily in an attempt to sound conversational. I have the respected Burton Raffel translation in paperback, and I am not at all happy with it. It already sounds more dated than the Ormsby, though in a different way.It's a tough row to hoe. When the author writes "no he podido yo...", how do you capture the connotation of that grammatically redundant "yo"? -- "Certainly I..."? "I of all people..."? It may be a sign of wisdom that no one tries.In any case, this seems to be among the best value of the Kindle translations available. With Ormsby, you get a faithful translator with a consistent voice. You can spend more, but in English I am not sure you will get more.

Print is incredibly small as u can see in the pic compared to my thumb and page # being normal size. Illustrations are 2”x2 1/2”. Very disappointed.

I couldn't read this book - the type wasn't optimised for kindle and line breaks in the middle of words and sentences don't lead to easy reading.I deleted this item.
