Q: I have pre-existing 2.5 inch holes in a desk. Is there enough of a lip for these to function there or would they slip through?

The outer live is almost 2 3/4 inches. I cut my hole (no pre-existing on my desk) to 2 3/8. It might be tight. I recommend you look for a 2.5 inch grommet but that is your call. Might be worth a $5 gamble.

Q: What size hole opening needs to be cut for this grommet?

The size of saw required is the size of the grommet = 2-3/8 inches. They don't make allowances for the thickness of the plastic. I used a 2-1/4" hole saw and then expanded the hole with a 00 wood rasp so I could ensure a tight fit.

Q: can they be mounted on sheetrock

yes, remember that any twisting of the grommet after mounting will slowly crrate a widening of yoir hole and the dust from the sheetrock will accumulate somewhere as well. Probably best to maybe glue it in to stop any pptential turning of the grommet after mounting.

Q: Will a power cord end fit through the opening?

Yes it will. I needed these to route power cables through a desk. The triangular pieces are flexible enough that a power cord with a transformer end (like for a phone or battery charger) will fit through them.
