This item is great for both the backwoods and shopping mall. I got it for my wife to find her car when she exits the mall... Yes, some of the parking lots are huge! The day that we received it, we went to a new park and brought the Backtrack along. By the time we got to the field that our grandson was at, we couldn't see the parking lot, and there were 4 of them. When the game was over, I pressed the automobile icon and followed the direction that the Backtrack pointed us to. It led us to within a few feet of the car! It works great and is easy to use.

I bought 2 of these for avid hunters in the family. The simplicity of use ensures even technically challenged individuals (like my father-in-law!) can use this GPS device easily. Set the icon for the truck, walk to your camp / hide location, set that icon and then off you go. If you want to find your camp, hit that button & follow the arrow. Want to get back to the truck, hit the truck icon and the arrow leads you right back within inches! In case you're wondering, YES it works great even in the deep woods! Highly recommend this GPS, does exactly what it says, flawlesly.

Tried it in Sierra Mountains, Bass lake, Ca. Takes long to pick up a signal, but it finds it (already good for such a device that looks like a toy). I carry it only for emergency all the time while camping now - being lost one mile from the camp, enough of experience:) Works as advertised, but can be smaller and of course cheaper. Carrying auto GPS is overkill and hungry on batteries. Update: funny, but useless.

The backtracker is a very relieable gps. You need to trust it. I really think it is worth the money. One thing I don't like is the cover on the back. It needs some attention. comes off when you don't want it to,and when you want it off you can't get it off.

I bought several of these as gifts. I kept one to try out and was less than impressed. Most of the less than satisfactory reviews were accurate. It took a long time to lock satellites, needed a clear and wide view of the sky, and you had to walk or move several feet for it to register the direction towards the waypoint you saved (or even to use the compass). I will stick with my Garmin Etrex legend for the woods, my Nuvi for the car and my iPhone for everywhere in between. Yes, I'm a gadget hound.
