Q: How long does the water stay hot in the carafe? I'd like to boil the water in the morning and have it stay hot all day long.

I did not get the stainless steel carafe. I got the glass carafe. From my experience in using products similar it lost about four hours. If you want your water boiling hot, I suggest you turn on and re-boil the water.

Q: Is this stainless steel kettle cordless? I didn't see it mentioned. It looks like it may sit on a separate heating element -- is that correct?

The kettle has a separate heating element with a cord attached that plugs into an outlet, the kettle sits on it for heating. This kettle can't heat up without it.
