Set it and forget it. The alarm will tell you it's done!
I bought this thermometer, as well as the other thermometer by Riesto, to test out as gifts. They are actually the same thermometer, just packaged with differing bonus items. Confession: I failed to read the instructions properly (my bad) and as a result did not use the thermometer to its full potential. That is, I baked a tray filled with chicken leg quarters and used the thermometer as I would any other: I inserted it when the baking time was nearing completion to test if each piece was the right temperature. I liked that I could select the type of meat I was measuring, and the thermometer would know at what temperature that type of meat must be cooked (for example, the chicken I cooked must reach 174 F). It can also be set to detect the temperature while it bakes (the thermometer must remain outside the oven to do that), and will alert you to when the meat is done. Assembly of the parts of the thermometer system was intuitive, and the instructions are really only needed to begin using the thermometer's digital touch screen/to understand the settings. As a bonus it comes with an extra probe, a cinch bag, and surprisingly, batteries! (When was the last time you bought something that included those?) So you can get started right away using it. I think this thermometer is eminently giftable, and I intend to pass it on to family members for Christmas.

Works great
Used it for Thanksgiving and it was great! The only issue is that the magnets keep coming off. But very accurate.

Stopped working entirely after three months.
After I wrote the review below, I decided that well, the thing mostly at least worked to detect temperature. so I could sort of use it. Feb. 25th, the thermometer told me that a piece of raw meat just out of the fridge was a whopping 450 degrees. Yup, this thing broke entirely. I've had it since early December, so wow, three months before it broke.I bought this for reverse searing meats, a process that requires you roast meat to a specified temperature, then pan seared it. I loved that the probes worked in the oven and that it would beep at the programmed temp. However, today, after two months of being used 3x/week, I can no longer set my custom temp. If I press the down button, I get random temp changes, same with the up button.I've replaced the batteries, that had no effect. It's a darned shame because I really liked this thermometer, it made cooking easier.

Worked for a while
The first time I used it after it read the desired temperature the display changed from the temperature to HHH. I tried using it later and it still displays HHH instead of the meat temperature.

Came out perfect from the first try
Used it for the 1st time when roasting a 13lb turkey in a cooking bag. Inserted the probe through the bag and into the thigh. Set the temp alert for 178 degrees. After 2 hours and 10 min it alerted me that the bird had reached 178 degrees. I took the turkey out and let it rest. The Turkey came out absolutely tender and delicious. So happy I purchased this, no more dried out, or undercooked meats.

I love this thing
I love this thing. I eat a lot of chicken and pork so I need to know my meat is temping correctly. My regular meat thermometer bent and had not worked right since. It also required opening the oven multiple times and not always getting a correct temp. Now, I set it, stick it and walk away only to come back to perfectly cooked meat. Awesome!
