That's what I thought a first. But, man, was I wrong. It does use a heavy gauge expanded metal screen as the starting point. But it's covered in a heavy duty paint / enamel / powder coat. I'd highly recommend this if you got their legacy fire pit insert. The screen feels like it will last quite a while. It also completely changes the performance of the fire pit for the better. The log coals don't fall through the grate as easily and therefore burn longer with fewer partially burned chunks in the ash pan. I wish they would have included this in the fire pit insert kit, but still totally worth the extra purchase.
