Must-have book for PhD students
I don't write reviews unless I find something exceptional. However, I cannot emphasize enough how useful this book has been to me as a PhD student in the early stages of research. What sets this book apart is that it provides a rigorous explanation why certain approaches are adopted in answering a question, such as the importance of comparative groups and in-depth discussion of the implications of causal models. Other things I found particularly helpful was the chapter on developing questions, the examples illustrating the intuition behind his argument and follow-up questions to test your understanding. If I wrote a book on research design to answer my own questions, this is exactly how I would have written it. After applying some of this advice to my own work, the impact was immediate and the quality of my research has improved significantly because I am able to evaluate evidence more effectively. This is a must-have book for any PhD student because it can save you a lot of time as it points out easy mistakes you could make and explains how to approach research questions properly.

An illuminating read!
This book explains how to neatly design studies based on research questions. One of the most impressive features of this book is the inclusion of apropos circumstantial instances from real life and research. The book reads like a story. The writing style however eliminates the need to follow it in a stereotyped order. The reader could luxuriate in reading the book as presented or could even jump from one chapter to the next in any random fashion. Novice researchers from different academic backgrounds or even those wanting to pursue interdisciplinary research with limited understanding of Social sciences will find solace in this well-crafted book.

Practical, but
The book is very practical, unlike other resources which usually contain confusing terms. But the book doesn't contain a comparison chart of all research methods, which is understandable, as the author tries to emphasize the importance of research design vs research methods.

Perfect for what I need it for
Perfect for what I need it for. I'm currently looking at research designs in preparations for my Masters dissertation and this is going to be invaluable. Would highly recommend for anyone either studying towards their MA, Ph.D or doing any research as part of their employment.
