Watercolor Textures for Artists: Explore Simple Techniques to Create Amazing Works of Art

I am a beginner in watercolor, and frequently find "beginner" books too complicated for me. I am so pleased to say that is not the case with this book. Ana Victoria Calderon starts with the basics of watercolor, and then shows how to add some simple textures. It is surprising to see how effective they are. She then goes on to show you how to use textures in ever more complex paintings. The photographs are lovely and very helpful. I can't wait to try these techniques out! Ana Victoria is an amazing artist! She’s on Instagram and all of her books have so many lessons where she shares her many techniques painting watercolors. You come away with tools to enrich your own artistic style. All of her books are on Amazon.

Great book with easy exercise to follow to help with inspiration.Love her style. Definitely I need more time playing around. Love the book. It has a lot of exercises for sure.

Although I’ve been painting a few years, I find this book a delightful departure from traditional reality painting. The exercises slows the mind and helps one focus on the finer points of brush control. This book encourages practice for which I’m sure many painters can benefit.., not just beginners

I like to make bad watercolor sketches and paintings, and grabbed this book to help with creating textures.The author makes it clear upfront, however, that the focus of the book is not on creating realistic textures per se, but wants to open you up to the idea of different kinds of patterns and things as textural ideas or abstractions. Personally, I wanted a book more focused on realistic textures. If I had seen this book in a book store, I'd have probably passed on it for that reason, but if you like this style of abstract textures, this book might be for you.The book contains a little overview about materials and watercolor basics (don't they all?), with a good explanation of wet/dry on wet/dry variations. The first set of textures provide detailed explanations of how to create them step-by-step. As you get into the more inspirational sections, the author assumes you have figured out the techniques explained early and provides a much shorter explanation of the techniques. Unfortunately, a few of the techniques explained in the latter sections are not explained in detail elsewhere in the book (e.g. salt techniques), but you could easily find online.In the back of the book she provides some line drawing templates for a few of the inspiration projects, if you'd rather not draw them yourself, though you'll need to transfer them to watercolor paper as this book is not a workbook.Like I said earlier, I wish the book covered more realistic textures, but if you know what you are getting and this is what you want, it's a decent book for that.

Wonderful book, great illustrations and tutorials. I recommend this book for beginners and intermediate watercolor artists. You will learn a lot.

One of the best books on textures that I've read, and believe me, I've read quite a few. Really fun projects and ideas to spark your creativity.

Excellent livre qui nous permet d'apprendre l'aquarelle sans stress. Il est possible également d'utiliser les "template" des sujets à la fin du livre si désiré. À titre de débutante, le seul petit bémol que je pourrais exprimer est que j'aurais aimé avoir le nom des couleurs utilisées mais comme le livre est fait pour justement utiliser notre imagination, je peux comprendre. Les livres sur l'aquarelle un peu abstrait et moderne et rafraichissant sont plutôt rares, j'aimerais bien voir d'autres livres de cet acabit.

Muito completo, esse livro é uma maravilha para quem gosta de pintar aquarelas, pois ensina muitas técnicas e dá asas à imaginação para partimos em outros projetos inovadores. Fartamente ilustrado, esse livro realmente ajuda desde o iniciante até o pintor mais treinado, que deseje aprender truques novos, kkk!

Absolutely love this book. Explanations are clear. I’ve loved trying out the techniques. The practice techniques themselves create art. I just cannot put this book down other than to paint

El libro es muy bonito y tiene diseños muy chulos pero apenas explica cómo hacerlos por lo que es más visual que instructivo. Un poco decepcionada.

I love all of this artist's books, and this one is no exception! With beautiful images and easy step-by-step instructions, it's perfect for anyone who's interested in learning different watercolour techniques. All of her books are unique, and each one is a joy to read and learn from. Highly recommend!
