In response to your inquiry,  22" is the height of the headboard only, 7" is the length of the knockdown metal leg.  However, the correct height of this product (from top to toe) is 43.1" (mentioned on listing)

In response to your inquiry, Bme's Georgina bed frame is made almost entirely from high quality solid wood, except for 4 steel legs and only 1 MDF panel used for supporting Headboard. However, You do not need to worry because these accessories are used to strengthen the solid wood base, and at the same time do not affect the capacity or aesthetics of the product.

If my mattress is only 8 inches will there be a visible gap below the headboard? What is the minimum mattress height to ensure there is no gap?

In response to your inquiry,  the gap from the slat to headboard is 10.4 in. Therefore, if you use 8 in the mattress, the gap between your mattress and headboard will be 2.4 in. There is a high chance your pillow can pass through this gap.  This can be prevented if you use a US standard size  mattress with 10- 12in thickness.  With this thickness, gap won't be there
