Read to my Heart's Content Reviews
I gave it four stars here on Amazon because the 3 stars rating on here doesn't match up to the 3 heart rating I have on my blog, as well as other sites. I liked The Fallen Star, I didn't love it, but it was much better than okay. Sorry if that doesn't make sense-I think I understand it. :)My Thoughts:Everyone knows how I love to judge a book by its cover~and yes I know how wrong that is~so I have to give praise for the beautifully illustrated cover. When I do my reviews, I try to pick up on one of the most important colors, whether it be vital to the storyline or just a color that stands out on the cover art, and I use a color closest to this as my headers.I tried to do this for The Fallen Star too. It really is such a beautiful color too. So of course that is the first thing that stands out for me; plus the fact that the color is pretty important as well in the story.I was torn with this story. I loved Sorensen's writing style, the beautiful prose she seems to put down that has me trying to capture the essence of what she is saying in my mind, along with the plot line that is an unique idea unto itself. She pulls creatures that we hear stories about all the time: vampires, angels, demons; and then creates other characters that seem to come out of nowhere. Like Gemma. Gemma is an enigma. A girl that isn't supposed to feel anything, begins to have the prickling sensations that alert her to new emotions coming to her. We find ourselves being drawn into Gemma's world; her loneliness that eats her up.And this is probably why Alex, the new boy that comes into her life, isn't on my favorites list. I don't know I just cannot like him. Yes he is gorgeous, but this seems to be the standard for all YA paranormal books. I am not complaining; just stating a fact here. He is brooding and mysterious too. But he is just so damn rude. And it isn't that he is a smart-ass either, that I could handle. He is just....rude.For example, if he doesn't want to hear what Gemma has to say anymore, he covers her mouth with his hand. Sorry dude, but if you did that to me, you would probably be coming back with a nub.The other characters aren't really that memorable for me either. Well except one. Laylen is pretty cool. And there is an elf dude that I think has potential. But sorry Alex is just not the one I can root for in any of this.Besides my total dislike for our main male lead, I also notice the story does seem to lag in some areas. It wasn't totally boring but I did find myself wanting to skip ahead at certain places. Especially when it seemed certain visions needed repeating.Other than all of that though, I did enjoy The Fallen Star. Like I said before, Sorensen's writing style is lyrical. It floats by and is easy to fall into getting lost in the translation of this different world from everyday life here.It is always fun to read about the underground world that lives right among us, with magic all around us. This is what keeps me interested in reading book 2 and so on. The magic that is captured on paper, that consists of Gemma's fate.It definitely isn't Alex or his influence on her.I gave it 3 hearts because I liked The Fallen Star.

Great Start to a Great Series! A Must read!
The Fallen Star is about a girl named Gemma who was not able to feel any emotions until recently. Gemma meets Alex and she feels different around him, and after meeting him she starts to piece to together information about her past and she finds out that the monsters that haunt her in her dreams are actually real.(summary from book)Fallen Star is the first in a young-adult paranormal series by indie author Jessica Sorensen. The summary for the book, does not say a lot on what it is about, so I will tell you some, no spoilers though. We can see that Gemma is troubled. There are some new classmates Aislin and Alex that seem to know things about Gemma, things, she doesn't even know. Gemma can be pretty strong willed at times, as well as impulsive. But then, there are times we can see the mysteries surrounding her scare her. She will soon find out a shocking revelation about her life. This is a very creative story, love the fantasy and mysteries around it.The world that Jessica has created along with the characters and the magicks she places into this world are very intriguing. As this is only part of a series, there's obviously a lot of depth and complexity that she can explore. She has Fallen Angels, Fallen Stars, Foreseeres, Faeries, Vampires, Keepers, Witches, Death Walkers, the works really. The plot itself has lots of potential as well. The idea of a fallen star is not unique to this story, but the twist and turn she has given it is very original. This star can save the world, and that's the intriguing premise and the fun one that can really draw a reader in.Also, having the character suddenly be able to feel emotions is an interesting idea. I felt that Sorensen could potentially delve into exactly what Gemma's feelings and how she feels it. There is a very complex and interesting idea of the soul and emotions tied together, and that being the very essence of a human being is something that she could explore. As of writing this (updating) I have already read the rest of the series, and will tell you now, that this book is necessary to read to understand it all, but keep in mind, it's a first step in a series, and the characters and story really grow over the series of books, questions you have in this one do get answered, I promise, its written this way. It's worth reading, and for sure going on to the next 3 after this one. (There is even a spin off series that is also amazing, with same characters, with a whole new adventure)The best part is how within a few pages you are sucked into the story! I stayed up WAY too late doing the `one more Chapter' thing till the wee hours of the morning. It hooks you from the first chapter. I am hooked on the series, and impatiently waiting for the 2nd in the spin off. The Lost Soul is out, and I read it, now waiting for book 2.I highly recommend to anyone who enjoys the supernatural with some twist and turns, and suspense.Check out my review blog for more stuff

Doh!
One of the worse reads I ever had. Got it for free on Kindle, the synopsis and the 600+ 4/5 stars comments convinced me to give it a go. I hated the style of writing from the beginning; it seemed to be written by a primary 7 pupil using verbal skills of young teenagers. Gemma the main character isn't very likeable and at times real thick. This book seemed to want to be a sort of clone of the Harry Potter series (main character doesn't know he/she's special and a parallel universe does exist with vampires, deatheaters, etc...) but failed to capture me. After 5 chapters I felt like giving up and I skipped a couple of chapters until something, some action would take place. When it eventually did, the pace picked up for a while (still annoyed by the childish writing). The last chapter stopped abruptly in full action, without closure or some form of conclusion to bring on the next book.

Promising...
First of all I'd like to mention that this cover is beautiful. I could just stare at it all day long. Kudos to the artist. When I started reading the book I couldn't put it down. The author hooks you from the first page with Gemma's humor and quirkiness. She's invisible at school, mainly because Gemma grew up with the ability of not being able to feel anything; sadness, anger and even love. It didn't take long for her emotions to suddenly burst out from inside her, and neither Gemma or the people around her can understand why. Then enter Alex, a boy that gave new meaning to the word "lie." He's been sent to protect her, but can she trust him? Gemma is soon running for her life which thrusts her into a world of supernatural. The story is fun and creative, but after a few chapters I noticed that Gemma ALWAYS repeats everything said to her.Example (not written word for word):"You have a star inside you."Gemma: "I have a star inside me?""I'm a vampire."Gemma: "You're a vampire?"It goes on like that throughout the novel. However, it was still a good story.
