The Gulag Archipelago [Volume 2]: An Experiment in Literary Investigation (Perennial Classics)

It's a classic. What more can I say? Books are very nice. Try turning off your phone/tv and reading. You will be surprised how nostalgic it is.

The second volume of Solzhenitsyn's masterpiece revolves around his life in the Gulag. Volume 2, as with the preceding and succeeding volumes, is a beautifully written epic that transcends genre descriptions such as fiction, memoir, history, existential novel. Some of the best quotes from Volume 2 are as follows:"The decades go by. We do not manage to sort things out and understand ourselves even on one plane before the next one is deposited in a new layer of ash." (p. 135 fn. 7)."A stone is not a human being, and even stones get crushed." (p. 356)."To pardon a thief is to kill a good man." (p. 431)."Unlimited power in the hands of limited people always leads to cruelty." (p. 546).

Great book by an awesome author.

The Gulag Archipelago is many things: a first hand account of life in the gulag, a systematic overview of the system, a psychoanalysis of the administrators and forced participants in this archipelago and much, much more.Obviously, it has historical importance as a factor in the fall of the Soviet state. But its greatness as literature is also due to its persuasive analysis of the Gulag as a cancer on the social bonds and body politic of the Russia of its day.Not a conventional believer by any means, Solzhenitsyn is able to see the erosion of civil society brought about the Gulag. The atmosphere of fear, the self-disgust from forced collaboration, the betrayals of the bonds of family and friendship—all of these are a cancer slowly invading and killing the healthy parts of society remaining from the days of Tsarism.Ultimately Solzhenitsyn discovers that invisible line running through every person whereby we choose the good or consent to evil. The Gulag is nothing but a systematization of this choice across a country.A perspicacious vision that informs much of the ills of today’s Russia. Looking forward to volume III.

similar to vol 1 very interesting and informative but with vol1 a little wearing on the reader as the narrative goes on and on with same tone and intensity much like a very long paragraph the ''truth'' becomes almost boreing sorry to say about an heroic opus

I am so happy I chose the unabridged version, as this is a work that needs to be told in full.

I am embarrassed that I waited until 63 to read this masterpiece.

Brilliant. Beautifully written. A warning too of things that could come back around if people cave and cower to those in power.

Brutal slavery into the 50’s. Do we still think it can’t happen “here”, “now” ?

Such a shame the horrors of the "Soviet experiment" is barely taught in schools across the Western world. Mr Solzhenitsyn tells the story in a very unique way. Dark and harrowing yet witty and humorous. A must read for any serious scholar of the Bolshevik revolution, the institutions it created and for the millions who suffered. Some of their stories live on through this work.

Volume 1を読み終えたのが４月だから、このVolume 2を読み終えるのに5か月かかっている。もっともこの本だけを読んでいたわけではないのだが、１５０日で約700ページという亀のようなペースでの読書となる。そういう作品なのだ。扱われているテーマが陰惨なのだ。このvolume２は著者自身の経験を基に、この強制収容所での生活が細かく描写されていく。この強制収容所という考え方の萌芽と発端、一般の囚人（いわゆる犯罪人、本書では泥棒と呼ばれる）と刑法58条の下で引っ張られた無実の囚人との間の取り扱いの差、いわゆる模範囚、収容所生活での生存術などだ。この強制収容所という仕組みは社会主義体制と切っても切れない関係にある。通常の市場経済のルートでは資源を動員することはできない。というわけで、労働力を強制的に集め、様々な国家的なインフラ建設に動員するという「邪悪」な発想がそこには生まれるのだ。マルクス主義法学という倒錯した法体系の下で作り出された「罪」により、徴発された労働力は、強制的にノルマを与えられ、ひどい生活条件の下で、自分の食い扶持を稼ぎながら、この建設に強制的に動員される。賃金の支払いはほぼない。遅れてきた資本主義国ロシアはこのような形で強制的に資源を動員したのだ。国家プロジェクトが要請する人員が先にあり、それに基づいて片っ端から無実の民を強制的に引っ張ってくる。このような仕組みの下では、誤魔化しと数字合わせとアリバイ作りが横行する。五か年計画などという誤魔化しの下では、経済が発展する内在的な仕組みなど生み出されるわけがないのだ。最終的にソヴィエトが経済的に破綻するのは既定路線なのだ。ロシアという土壌だからこそ、皮肉にも７０年も持ちこたえたのだともいえる。著者が掘り下げるのは、このような体制運営が社会のモラルや人間関係にもたらした負の影響だ。俗な言葉でいえば、「窮すれば鈍す」なのだ。このような体制の下では、虚偽と裏切りが社会全体を支配していく。虚偽が真実という倒錯が横行し、人間性の負の側面が肥大化していく。皮肉なことに「存在が意識を決定づける」のだ。真実への探求が否定された、このような状況下で生み出されたいわゆる社会主義リアリズムの文学（ゴーリキーやショーロフ）は、必然的に体制への協力と虚偽がその本質となり、そこに内在する虚偽のゆえ全否定されていく。強制収容所をその本質的な構成要素とした社会の描写に決定的に失敗しているというわけだ。もっとも皮肉なことに、ロシア文学ならびに社会には、いつも「苦痛を通して真実へ」というマゾヒスティックな側面もあり、ソビエトという負が大きければ大きいほど、それを否定並びに昇華する善のエピソードが散見されるのだが。ここでは皮肉なことに「意識が存在を決定する」という破格現象が散見されるのだが、これはあくまでも例外的なエピソード足らざるを得ないが、その描写こそが文学的な営為となる。著者が、なぜこの作品のサブタイトルを「An Experiment in Literary investigation」（邦訳では「文学的考察」、原語のロシア語ではどうなのだろう？）と名付けたのか、ここまで読んできて、何となくわかったような気がした。これは「考察」ではなく、文学という技法を通しての、収容所という犯罪への「捜査」(investigate)ならびに「告発」の書なのだろう。考察などという第三者的な作業ではなく、「告発」という心の底からの叫びなのだろう。もっとも文学という世界と法律の体系は両立することは困難。なぜ社会主義体制はこの強制収容所という仕組みを必然的な生み出してしまうのだろう。ウイグル人の強制労働にも見られるように、今の中国（A new china manの創造)にもその残滓は残っている。「人間は改造できる」というその強烈な進歩幻想と「政治」という可能性の技術への嫌悪そして社会の多数のアリバイ作りへの同調は、いつの時代にもグロテスクな状況を引き起こす。時代時代によりその様相と抑圧の洗練さの度合いが異なるだけのだ。まだVolume 3が残っている。
