Hi the answer to your question is somewhat subjective, you could ask 10 bricklayers about a trowel and get 10 different answers so ill try to answer the best i can. Firstly the different blade styles are as you say are the london pattern or the philedelphia pattern ,the philedelphia pattern is traditionally used by american bricklayers and is designed to build "overhand" ( face brickwork on the other side from where you are standing ) they have a curved blade that allows the excess mortar to be scrapped off without smearing up the face of the brick. The london pattern is traditionally meant for building face brickwork on the same side as the finished wall.these blades come in narrow or broad shouldered trowel styles narrow shouldered tend to be easier to control for cavity walls due to the closeness of the second wall . the length of any trowel is also a matter of choice i personally find an 11 inch trowel to be ideal for me however i tell apprentice bricklayers to start with a 10 inch trowel to learn how to roll the mortar out and butter a brick at this stage in their career they have neither speed or competence as they learn with a smaller trowel they get confidence quicker. You can buy trowels that are 12 and 13 inches long but in my opinion they would be very heavy to hold loaded with mortar and therefore impracticle so therefore the size and type is purely personal hope this helps
