The Rumi Daybook: 365 Poems and Teachings from the Beloved Sufi Master

Wonderful book that portrays a view and understanding of the magnitude of Rumi’s works and the deeper meaning aimed towards enlightening the soul. I’ve been reading for a while and couldn’t help but annotate almost every other page, I highly recommend.

I lived on this book for a while after and through a hard time in my life. I'm a muslim and Rumi is from my country but I have never read it this religiously. A lot of his poems recite a verse of quran which I was reading simoultaneously. I highly recommened this book if you are doing soul searching. I can say that the poems changed my life at times or at least had a very deep effect on me. I loved the book and take it every where with me on my kindle. It is a deep read but I went through it very fast as it was hard to put down.

Some beautiful poetry and reflections on God. It's worth the read to hear from a man who clearly deeply loves God.

This book takes another look at Rumi from someone other than Coleman Barks. The translations are supposed to be more accurate and literal, but it is not as poetic as Barks' works. However, for those who are real scholars of Rumi it is a great addition!

For this lover of Rumi, the translations that come closest to achieving the right balance between fidelity to the original Persian and creative flair utilising the possibilities of the English language are those of Kabir and Camille Helminski. Beauty and faithfulness in conveying his message are equally important to them. Here's an example of an evocative quatrain I particularly like (the "daf" mentioned below is a type of frame-drum):O Daf, tell the secrets hidden in the diaries of the lovers.O Hand, keep the rhythm with blood-pulsing veins.O Voice of the singer, go deeper and deeper into the heart,take me from this salty somewhere to that infinite nowhere.[Quatrains: 1411]They also seem to strike the perfect balance in terms of the significance given to Islam within the life, work, and message of Rumi. Whereas some translators strip Rumi's poetry of its Islamic roots to make it more "palatable" to Western audiences, there are others who become rather shrill at the idea that Rumi can be appreciated outside the context of Islam and who try to tie him in a straight jacket. The Helminskis recognise the huge importance of Islam, the Quran, and Muhammad in Rumi's work, often offering footnotes which clarify the Islamic sources of Rumi's inspiration. Yet the context they offer is never alienating and always has one eye on the wider context of our shared humanity.The Helminskis are teachers in the Mevlevi Order, the living Sufi tradition founded by Rumi over 700 years ago, so the reader can be sure that they have a profound understanding of what they are translating. They have had many translations of Rumi's works published, but this may well be their most accessible and practical. A lot of thought has gone into extrapolating wisdom that will speak to our contemporary situation and concerns, especially for those who are committed to a spiritual path or practice, whether it be Islamic or not.For instance, in between zhikr in our Sufi circle we open a page from this book at random and read whatever pearl of wisdom is thrown up. This is facilitated by the fact that each entry tends to be relatively short and readily digestible when read aloud. So often we find the poem speaks to the Moment.Most of the entries in the book are excerpts from Rumi’s great master work the Mathnawi, however there are some short extracts from the Fihi Ma Fihi (prose discourses) and some quatrains from the Divan-i Shams-i Tabriz. Those looking for the more ecstatic ghazals of the Divan-i Shams-i Tabriz should check out Love's Ripening, translated by Kabir Helminski in partnership with Ahmad Rizwani.

I love this book. Ordering this next one for a friend. Great spiritual teachings no matter what religion you are.

I bought one for myself in the Turkish airport a couple of years ago and loved it l. Have since bought another two as gifts and have been well received. The translations are great and never fail to help with self reflection and direction. Would recommend for every home library.

I love this book, for me it is the best translation possible of his words.I read from it since years every morning. but of course it is a matter of taste.The other translations of Rumi I also have and they are also beautiful, but the Helmiuski's top it for me.

Sehr hübsches Cover, aber vom Inhalt war ich gar nicht begeistert. Vlt muss man mehr über den Hintergrund vom Sufismus haben, aber ich hab wirklich nichts mitgenommen aus dem Buch. Sorry, Rumi.

A lovely book, I'm new to the works of Rumi but I like the idea of a poem a day. Super speedy delivery too by the speaking tree, recommend as a seller of good quality used books.

I bought this for a friend and he loves it! Though I haven't seen it for myself I love Rumi's poetry so I'm sure I'd be equally delighted with it.
