Garmin Foretrex 601 Outdoor, Hiking, Military, Army GPS Watch Navigation

It is is all in the planning. I replaced a foretrex 101 with the foretrex 601 taking advantage of the new features, plotting routes and transferring from a pc (or Mac) to the 601. Ideal for hands free navigation while walking. I bought some rechargeable batteries which are easy to change over even when walking! I plot routes on my pc and mobile with anquet software and digital ordnance survey maps. I use the mobile instead of a paper map and checking the mobile by exception - relying on the foretrex 601 to guide me on my pre-planned route.I choose the 601 over the 401 to try out the connectivity to a smart phone using garmin connect to record activity.

Great piece of kit. Use it daily. Had a problem at first with it not saving my track. A quick search and problem was solved by connecting it to the phone and deleting the .fit files. Never had a problem since. The display is great for me as I can see it without the need for glasses.I like the fact that I can easily change the batteries and don't need to charge it daily! All I've ever wanted from a GPS.

This has been the best Garmin I’ve owned to date, I’ve owned a 301, 401 and yellow hand held one which I can’t remember the series of, but this one has really shone, it’s easy to use, very military friendly, robust, functional and sleek looking, a must have for an infanteer

Very intuitive to use once you get used to the function of the four buttons with almost every field customisable from a wide selection of values on each screen. The supplied "map" is very basic with little detail other than main roads and additional information can be quite expensive too. The strap works well and comes with an elastic extension so it can be worn over a glove or sleeve.

This thing is superb. Load it up with Lithium batteries for longest battery life and have a few spare ones in the back pack. This thing gives me the freedom to explore as I feel without worrying about not finding my way back... This should be mandatory for new survivalists, trekkers who like to go off the path and explore!!!Highly recommend!!!

I've had Foretrex's for many years and this is the latest reincarnation, my fourth.Firstly, I began to wonder if it was faulty - until I realised IT TOOK SEVERAL HOURS to find our local satellites. It behaved as if it had been assembled on Pluto! It kept telling me that 'satellites not found, OK?' Finally it got there.Several oddities are irritating. The text and mapping of routes etc is in smaller font than the older versions. Why?The cable connection is annoyingly inside the battery case. Why?Garmin devices have still not become linkable to e.g. UK Ordnance Survey maps. Why?I'll put in a fuller review after I've used the 601 for a while.

Absolutely fantastic. Takes a little use to get used to the functions but when you know how to use it, it really is great!!

Really happy with my 601 comfortable to wear and looks good. Am still learning all the functions especially the navigation features and setting the waypoints. The only downside is the sattellite loss which does tend to happen regular basis. Otherwise an impressive gadget for my wanderings.
