The Song of the Nightingale (Walker Studio)

A glorious marriage of story and art
The best picture books are a seamless union of words and illustrations and this book is a perfect example of that. Cleverly, the presence of the artist is an integral part of the plot, and we almost see the book being created before our eyes. Laura Carlin's luscious, primal paintings are matched beautifully and harmoniously by the elegance and eloquence of Tanya Landman's words and the result is a retelling of an old story in a fresh, original way. The fact that the nightingale is a plain bird until it sings is not new, but the explanation this book offers is wonderfully logical, but also lends the book a relevance to children, to prove that first impression can be wrong and that the most incredible talents can be uncovered when one looks closer. This book is a stunning future classic and bears rereading many times. Very highly recommended.

The most beautiful illustrations
Such a wonderful story of how animals got their colours, with the most inspiring illustrations that bring the animals to life with humour and colour. Both the story and the pictures had me savouring every moment of this story. The best book I have seen in a long time. An absolute triumph.
