Spelling Workout: Level E

Awesome spelling program!
My 4th grader enjoys this spelling program. It engages her by making her actively seek out the weekly spelling words from a list of about 20 words per week. It gives the student activities such as cross-word puzzles and it chooses words based on vowel pairs or words that make a certain sound but the many ways in which these words can be spelled in the English language. It also adds in review about every 6 weeks, or from what I've seen so far (we are in lesson 7 and there was a week of review for lesson 6, which covered lessons 1-5 that week). I think this is an excellent program. My daughter is 9 almost 10, but is a pretty solid speller for her age, although by no means excellent, she still makes mistakes with her spelling, and this book gives her a challenge, without being too hard nor too easy.

Great spelling book series
I've been using this series of books for over twenty years, with first children, and then grandchildren. I love the way that it forces the issue with transitioning from printing to handwriting. I am told that handwriting is not even taught in schools in many places today, and personally I think that's a darn shame. With this book, you have to at least learn to read handwriting. The exercises are generally interesting, and retention of the words seems to be pretty good.

Consider 'ordering up' a level for strong spellers?
My daughter (5th grade) really likes the exercises in these workbooks. I like the mixture of activities, for example: reading excerpts about a variety of topics that incorporate the spelling words, analogy work (like one might see on an SAT but at a kid's level), vocab matching, crosswords, editing exercises, etc.! The activities vary from week to week. The one downside we have experienced is that because my daughter is a strong speller, she is only finding difficulty with maybe one word at the most per week. We started with this one, Level E (which I think is appropriate for most 5th graders, per reviews I had read before purchasing) but quickly ordered Level F when I realized even starting multiple lessons in was not going to challenge her. This doesn't mean she knows all of the related DEFINITIONS to all the words, so it might be worthwhile for that reason… but as far as spelling exercises go, if you have a child that demonstrates strong spelling capabilities, you might want to 'order up' a level! Just my own personal experience. Someone recently shared with me that perhaps moving from 'Spelling' as a subject to 'Vocab' as a subject would be helpful at this point. Working on vocab, students still become familiar with the spelling of new words. We are still working on Level F for this year but I may start weaving in a vocab curriculum and make the switch next year. Hope this helps!

Homeschool favorite
I homeschooled my daughter until 8th grade and we used Spelling Workout exclusively. We worked on a lesson once a week with a simple test on Fridays. She is now a great writer because her vocabulary is extensive. The books encourage cursive around third year and my daughter loved it. I will miss homeschooling but she is excelling and happy in her public school. I’m happy that this choice in spelling curriculum helped.

Mostly self-directed spelling workbook
I really like these Spelling Workbooks for my son. We take a lesson a week and he enjoys the different ways they review the words. My only complaint is that the words are listed in cursive and he can't read cursive yet.

Great exercises, good practice for the word lists
You have to make sure your students are completely doing the work, but, if they do, they really are able to use these words. Good word lists.

Excellent for homeschooling.
My son uses the Spelling Workout books for homeschool spelling and they are wonderful. I love the word activities and the variation from one lesson to the next. I highly recommend them as a spelling curriculum.

Good review.
This book was great as it had a spelling list with each phonics topic covered. No color but that's fine for the older grades anyway.
