Event Horizon (1997) [DVD]

Frustrating
You can feel big, vital chunks missing from the movie where the fun stuff's been cut out; not just the most shocking moments but scenes that actually explain why the characters behave the way they do are just gone. Worse, they're gone forever; the original footage is lost, and there will never be a director's cut.

Space gore
I wish I'd researched this film more thoroughly before I watched it because I was expecting a science fiction film with interesting conceptual content and a clever mystery storyline. That's not what Event Horizon is. It starts out with good ideas, the special effects are pretty good and it has some excellent actors. But as you watch you realise it's really a horror film set in space. It's fair enough if you like that sort of thing, but such a pity, as science fiction can do so much more. Perhaps films should be labelled with the specific genre 'space gore' or 'sci-fi slasher' so that we viewers, fans or otherwise, have a better idea of what to expect.

Fantastic Horror/sci-fi flick.
Always loved this film and went to the cinema to see it on its initial release. It's very dark and macabre and quite graphic in places (for its time) so won't be enjoyed by everyone.Pacing of the film is pretty good and the acting and action is also top notch, making the characters that bit more believable. Yes, there are a few moments which are a bit on the slow side and could probably have been left on the cutting room floor.I would recommend that a nice, dark room, a big screen (bigger the better) and decent sound system (5.1 or better) is used to really get the most out of this film. Then it truly does shine. It's still good though without that - you'll just lose some of the visuals and ambience.I purposely haven't written anything about the film though as it's one of those you just need to watch, scare yourself silly with and enjoy.

Overlooked gem of horror
Great film, used to have it on dvd but some how it's gone missing, so bought the Amazon digital version. Action is good, some of the visual effects are a little off, but they do not detract from a very fun gory movie. It is unfortunate that we will never get to see the lost footage that filled in some of those cut story elements, particularly the gore scenes, but it is still an overlooked gem for sci-fi horror fans.

Not the uncut version
Absolutely superb film and would be 5 stars no question but there is great footage cut from this version. I had to look on youtube after watching to see the best bits that are cut from the film.

Underrated sci-fi horror . (Spoiler free)
This is a deeply unsettling film about the recovery of a ship with the ability to jump by folding space . The ship disappeared along with its crew years before apon its first jump , never to be heard from again , until now. A crowded schedule at the cinema meant this film flew under the radar for most . It was only when it released on home formats that it gained a cult following . Definitely worth watching , solid performances from good actors plenty shocks , twists and the star of the show is the ship itself , set up like a mechanised gothic cathedral .

Deteriorated
I know this is an older title, but wanted to see it on the strength of its 5 star review (on Prime). It started strong, building nicely with atmosphere and mystery...... Trouble is, for me, this was the best it got. As the last third found it descending into crass nonsense. Maybe I was having an off day, but I felt it ended weakly in a confusion of shlock horror. Meh.

Excellent film.
Last saw this film, a long while ago by now, and had been looking to pick it up again for a while. Got it for an excellent price on Amazon, shipped and delivered quickly and was securely sealed on arrival. The film itself has a good story to it, a fair mix of horror, action and sci-fi. Worth mentioning in an off topic manner, that this film would make a good reference in term of the Warhammer 40,000 universe, for someone looking to have an idea of the perils of Warp travel.Worth watching.
