Works great for separating pets
We use this to divide house between old cats and new cats. You’d think they would jump it but it’s much taller than a normal baby gate and so far no one has cared to make the attempt which has been a great relief. We use this free standing, do not have it mounted to anything. Using wall edges to “anchor” the end of it as cats will push up against it and have moved it enough to get to the other side. As long as we position it right next to wall and stairs that hasn’t been an issue. Really like the height on this gate and the width of it. It has three sections that we set up on a zig zag line so that it is free standing. If you tried to stand it on straight line it would definitely need to be bolted or tied onto something as it would fall over. I bought two sets to cross an open foyer and staircase area.

Best extra tall, extra wide and flexible gate for the price
I read many reviews before I bought this gate and finally determined that unless I wanted to spend a good deal more money, I would try it. I was warned that it was super flimsy so I was not surprised when indeed it is. However, I think for the price I paid for it on Amazon, it was worth it. Had another accordion type gate across a 6 foot space for 9 years and all was well until we adopted a jumper. So, really hard to find an extra tall gate with a 6 foot wide span that you don't have to leave across the opening all the time. Now, I had written the Carlson company and asked them if I would be able to "fold" this gate back and then pull it across when I wanted to close off the space and they said yes, that's what it was made for. Well now that is not at all true, as it was designed. It is permanently attached to each side. You would have to just use the gate door or get creative, leave one side not attached and figure some way to easily attach it to the open side when you want it pulled across, like a bungy cord or go ahead and put the mounts up and use them to attach some hooks that will hold onto that last pole, which is what we've done. Another thing, you cannot use the tiny little screws that come with it to attach it to a stud through sheetrock. It won't reach. Just get some longer screws. No big deal. As far as the gate being flimsy, it really is cheap quality and not designed to be "folded" back against one side so you have to leave the caps unscrewed a little, making it more flimsy. I can not speak for a destructive dog but I know it prevents a little jumper who just wants to lay on the living room furniture. I'm not sure it would hold up to much abuse. Also, if you think the cat door will let your cat and not a 60lb dog through, you would be sadly mistaken :) I have another gate with a door just like that and my new addition fit through the hole until she got over about 60 lbs. I would just block it a little so the cat could get through and dogs couldn't. I have another extra tall gate that is pressure mounted in a regular doorway. Note that's not a great idea either for a real creative stray. She just pulled it away from the door. You have to get creative when you bring in a full grown, sneaky little boxer mix, who was unsocialized and never lived in a house, but you can win! Actually, I've just crated her when we left until now. She finally settled down a little, which is what prompted me to find a gate she couldn't jump over. Wasn't much point before. She would have just found a way to tear it up. The only problem now was that she had discovered human couches are quite comfortable and she forgets to wipe her feet before coming in the dog door :). Anyway, hope the review helps. There are some much nicer looking wooden gates that will fold back but for significantly more money. If you're willing to spend more money, I wouldn't buy this gate. If you want a halfway decent gate that will deter a non-destructive dog, this is the one. Well, if you don't care that it is not pretty, that is. It really isn't, lol!!

Awesome Gate! (Just what we wanted - minus the screws)
We were in need of a gate to span our landing, which is just over five feet, in order to keep our toddler safe during the night. Her room is across from ours, and while we wanted to encourage her to come into our room on her own during the night, we did not want to sacrifice her safety in the process. This gate was the answer.I was attracted to the name brand of this gate, because we already have one at the top of our basement stairs, and we absolutely love it. The price was a bit higher than I would have liked, but luckily at the time of my purchase, the retail was marked down by more than half! The cat gate was also an incentive, because we would mainly be using this gate at night, when our cats are most active and have the run of the house. When it arrived, I was initially a bit surprised by the height. It really means extra-tall! However, I needed height, since our girl is a climber, and this is definitely tall enough. It was VERY easy to install, maybe 15 minutes tops. What took a little extra time was finding the screws that came with the gate, since one of the little bags had split open, and then realizing that they wouldn't work anyway. We were not screwing directly into wood, and we have plaster walls, so maybe the screws would work for someone else, but they barely went 1/4 inch into our wall. I ran downstairs quickly to find longer screws, which we had on hand, but if you are installing this gate with any expectation of staying power, I would recommend buying eight longer screws.Despite the small screws, this gate is everything we expected. My favorite thing about it is how quickly I can take it down and put it back up. While we would have worked around the gate during the day if we had to, it easily takes less than 5 minutes to detach this gate from the wall, fold it on itself, and stash in the closet. We are happy for the extra peace of mind that it affords us, and we will definitely look to buy other Carlson products in the future!
