Classic Epic Animated Film
Fire and Ice DVD released 30th October 2006 by Optimum Home Entertainment and Studio Canal. This classic epic animated-film is a tale of Good versus Evil, and is similar to Conan The Barbarian. Fire (volcanic-lava) versus Ice (glacier). Lord Nekron and his mother Queen Juliana, seek to dominate the world from their Castle Ice-Peak (glacier) using glaciers, and attack King Jarol and his son Prince Taro in their Fortress Fire-Keep (volcano), and in the process, the sub-humans abduct Princess Teegra (daughter of King Jarol, sister of Prince Taro). The lone-warrior Larn seeks to rescue Princess Teegra, and is assisted by the lone-horseman Darkwolf. This is a dramatic and epic tale, with excellent and dramatic music (composed and conducted by William Kraft). This is a sexy-film, and Princess Teegra is scantily-clad through-out. This film is suitable for both teenagers and adults. The characters were created by Ralph Bakshi and Frank Frazetta. The screen-play by Roy Thomas and Gerry Conway. Produced and Directed by Ralph Bakshi (who was responsible for the animated-film: Lord of The Rings - 1978). Original release-date 1982 by Producers Sales Organization and Polyc International B.V. The DVD back-cover states the running-time as 89 mins. approx. The DVD front-cover-art depicts Darkwolf, Princess Teega, Larn, and sub-humans. Award 5 Stars!

Classic Bakshi that looks great on blu-ray
I have been a fan of Ralph Bakshi movies since first watching his doomed attempt at Lord of the Rings when I was a kid. That animated LOTR movie was a great shame as was in many ways a masterpiece as it showcased exciting new techniques such as rotoscoping live action alongside the animation, but was ultimately proved too big a project for Bakshi and his studio.Fire and Ice was a collaboration between Bakshi and Frank Frazetta who was one of the most famous fantasy illustrators of all time, the Fire and Ice box cover is a classic example of Frazetta artwork. The film looks stunning in this blu-ray presentation from Blue Underground although showing its age with distortion in places, the transfer was handled with care and the colours are vibrant and sharp for a film over 30 years old. The audio has also been remastered and the score by William Kraft sounds better than ever.Highly recommended to all fans of fantasy and animation.

Basic fantasy adventure fun (some spoilers)
It's quite a barebones story. You have your evil guy who's evil just because. You have your good guys who you know are good because they're fighting the bad guy. The one character that has implied depth is the wolf-helm hunter guy, but it doesn't really go anywhere. I was actually expecting it to be revealed that he was the villain's father since who exactly that is was left out of the intro, if I remember correctly. It's incredibly formulaic and by the numbers, yet you get the feeling this is intentional. The title says it all really, two opposing elements. That's all it's trying to convey. There are some interesting detours into little scenes that add depth or intrigue to the world, like the short part with the witch in the cottage and her ogre-ish manservant who it turns out she is somewhat emotionally attached to. There's an implication that the fire king, effectively the leader of the last humans in this world, is willing to sacrifice his son to get his daughter back. When his son dies, he really just shrugs. A heirarchy within the "dogs of Nekron" is implied, and they seem to have their own animalistic language. Just little touches that bring some much needed depth or detail to the story.Perhaps the most interesting thing is the setting. On one hand, it's extremely simple (fire land, ice land, like an old 16-bit platformer) but there's an interesting atmosphere brought on by the fact this is really a post-apocalyptic setting more than a fantasy one (I know they're not mutually exclusive, but this really is 95% post-apocalyptic, 5% fantasy). The enemies seem more like mutated humans than orcs or goblins. Nekron is inducing an ice age across the world and there's just one holdout for humanity left. The natural low-techness of the fantasy setting feels equally at home in an post-apocalyptic world. In summary, this is sometimes bland, never particularly amazing, yet enjoyable and atmospheric all the same.

Someone make this into a live action film !
I have adored this film ever since I was a kid and I still watch it roughly once a year even though I'm now 43. Overlook the daft bits where you ask how the heroine is coping with running around the arctic in a bikini, because the rest of the story flies along at such a pace, with great characters, properly nasty, bloody spattering combat scenes and genuinely scary 'Why do the living disturb the sleep of the dead ?' moments. Also, the classical score is FANTASTIC all the way through and perfectly accentuates the action. Not sure why one of the heroes looks uncannily like Batman. Bit odd that, but easily forgiven. Just remembered the dragonhawks ! Oh, oh, and the kraken type thing and the lava and the chase through the jungle on the cliff top ! Look, just buy this !

Fire AND Ice 1982 Animated Film Blu- Ray Review
It began as once in a lifetime collaboration between two of the greatest icons of the fantasy genre: controversial animator Ralph Bakishi (Director of FRITZ THE CAT, WIZARDS and the original LORDS OF THE RINGS animated film) and legendary illustrator Frank Frazetta ( creator of the iconic CONAN THE BARBARIAN, VAMPIRELLA , DEATHDEALER and much more paintings, and Edgar Rice Burroughs book cover for John Carter's Barsoom Adventures. It became and remains one of the most startling animation epics of all time , that's for sure. Now experience a world unlike any ever seen, where savage warriors, horrific monsters and sub humans, luscious maidens battle for the soul of a civilization in a time of good and evil, pleasure and pain, and FIRE AND ICE. LONG BEFORE The song of Fire And Ice GAME OF THRONES!!!
