Friend Falls from Building and Alyce Becomes Nympho Druggy from Hell
This is one of those films that I had heard good things about, so I gave it a punt. I am not a massive horror fan but do like the psychological stuff, this has some of that but it also has a fair bit for gore fans too. It is about the Alyce in the title who after a night of drinking and snorting with her friend, decides to go up on the roof of her apartment to connect with the building. Whilst up there Alyce sort of accidentally pushes her friend off and oops she goes a splatter on the pavement.Alyce runs off bravely to her apartment to pretend it has not happened. This means lying to the police, then they tell her she is still alive but unable to speak. Now she was not only Alyces best friend but her only friend. Alyce works in one of those offices that emanates bullying and her boss is just horrible and now her only release is critically ill in a hospital bed. She has no choice but to get completely wasted on non prescription drugs. This she takes to like a duck to water. Problem is she is rather on the attractive side and her erudite dealer Rex, played brilliantly by Eddie Rouse decides he wants more than cash for the deal. She then enters the sad spiral into the abyss from which you can only ever claw your way back from - if you are lucky. This then is one of those films that is hard to place; it starts out like a tragedy with some good and some bad acting, and the sound levels vary a bit too. Then as it progresses into nightmare it becomes an abattoir - esque blood and guts horror. The sex is not that graphic either, just spooky, and we do not have harrowing scenes of drug abuse, it is the gore that gets this the rating.I did not particularly `enjoy' watching this but I have seen a heck of a lot worse and I have to say there is some good cinematography on show here. However, the one thing that will stay with you in this film is the offal, so if that is your thing then you should be ok. That said it is only in the last twenty odd minutes. If that is not then avoid and whatever you do not even think of having a snack whilst viewing, I was put off my Earl Grey, so do be warned. In the end it is just about 3.5 so am giving it three for the time being.

Slowly going crazy and loving it
My favorite Going Crazy With the Protagonist movie remains Ingmar Bergman's Hour of the Wolf, but Alyce comes in second, Well Ahead of Compulsion and even Black Swan. Some wild guy named Jay Lee wrote, directed, even shot this gritty gem, which makes him an American gutter auteur, I guess, who hits you with the most memorable tour of New York life as Hell since Taxi Driver 30 years ago. Basically, this is the story of guilt driving somebody crazy... she overcomes the problem by overcoming guilt, evolving from an insecure, dependent personality to what from the outside is insanity, but to Alyce is a new-found self assurance and ability to meet the world head-on... smiling as she raises a butcher knife. This torque between those two levels of reality is, I think, the basic strength of the film. Her last line (one word, one syllable, perfectly delivered) sums it up so beautifully. Acting is excellent throughout, much of it, I think, improvised -- it has that freshness -- and the shooting is intense, camera often extra-close to the side of a face, whiich gives you a strong p.o.v. Sense, without actually lletting you see what the character is looking at.. it's all part of Going Crazy with Alyce.

Could Have Been Really Good
It took me a while to work out why I wasn't enjoying this film. The actors were more than competent. Ok, if the lead role calls for nudity, it's better to hire an actress who's comfortable with taking her clothes off, but still. Then it dawned on me. It's not a horror thriller as described on IMDB, it's a comedy. Well that's fine for those who like it, but an opportunity has been missed here, If they'd played it straight, all the ingredients were there to make a really good psychological study of a young woman whose mind is disintegrating. And it would have become part of my collection.

Not the best horror
Bit disappointing. Same old story of revenge and an extended attempt at trying to manufacture some carnage with bodies being carved up in the kitchen. Pretty unimpressed.

No Rabbit Hole Here
You either love a film or you don't. I just loved it , for me the reality of the story was not to far out there , and I felt Alyce. Found the deposing of body scene amusing, really makes you think more than twice about doing it. One of the better films I have watched for a long time , and brings the fragility of being human into focus. Believe it or not.
