Intermatic WH40 Electric Water Heater Timer, Gray

i bought this to replace a similar timer and it fit perfectly and was easy to install. checked the progress and it works perfectly.

Had one of these before installed on an old home. Decided to install one on a new home to try and save a few dollars.

Simple, time proven electromechanical design. Reasonably priced. Well built, all metal construction. Easy to install. Easy to set time and trippers. Terminals will accept up to #8 stranded wire. I’m using two of these. One on a conventional tank type water heater and one on a tankless water heater to prevent them from running during peak hours that my electric utility charges more for electricity. . Very satisfied.

Just what I needed when the other one went out, easy to install, helps with electric bill.

Do it yourself-Turn water heater breaker OFF. Follow instructions. If handy with electric good, else get an electrician. I have used ONE OF THESE in 3 houses since 1979, my first house. They last a long time. I had a little problem with my start/stop clips getting bent so it wasn't working properly. Notice the red handle insulator in pictures above. Yours may be red or white. I had to shorten the insulator so it never rides on the slot in the door. I think it was restricting movement at start/stop time causing the clips to bend. I replaced them and clock is again good to go. I think this clock pays for itself in two months. Been a while since I checked. You might need additional wire-be sure U use the same gauge. Easy to installTurn off power first!

Well made and fairly easy to install. I used 8 gauge wire. It may take 6 gauge, but it would be hard. It comes with 4 sets of on-off "trips" so you can program 4 on-off cycles. I only have 1 on-off cycle with one 7pm off pin so if I manually turn it on it won't be on all night. Very good quallity.

I ordered this water heater timer because it was from a US company (in Illinois where I live) hoping that it would be a better product than the Chinese ones. Low and behold, this unit is made in Mexico. But that is not the point. I hired a professional electrician to install and set up the unit, which he did. The unit seemed to work for about two to three weeks. Not wanting to spend more money on the electrician I tried to troubleshoot it myself. Reading the manual and watching Youtube videos I reset the ON - OFF tips, readjusted the timer clock dial several times according to instructions. No use!After reading the problems others faced with this unit I realized that it was a bad design and a defective products from the get go. The sad part is that this Intermatic company does dot stand behind their product! They give a lousy 30 days return window on Amazon! Chinese manufacturers have better return policies!I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT. STAY AWAY FROM IT.

Installed the Little Grey Box a few days after receiving. Watched a video on Utube, Took my time andfollowed the instructions as presented on the video. Start to finish in 45 minutes. Unit appears to be working as intended. After a week i have observed the Off / On cycles and will consider adjusting theon time to be no more than an hour,, twice a day.. As demand will dictate the best start times YOU may well have to adjust or add some more Off / On cycles to suit your specific needs.As advertised, The initial cost should be recovered in 3-4 months.. I will await to see the hydro consumption numbers on my bills to see how accurate they are..

At the time of writing, I've had this device installed (correctly) for a week and so far so good.My biggest complaint is that the installation instructions could be clearer. According to the wiring diagram inside the door, the white neutral wires connects to pressure plate A, but they are in fact meant to connect to pressure plates 3 and 4, which are marked as "line 2" on the diagram. The instruction flyer has a slightly clearer image indicating how to wire the device and I have attached said image to this review, I've even colored in the green ground wires.Once I figured out where the wires are actually meant to go, I had no problem installing the timer, but be warned that you need a minimum of electrical tools and know-how to do it safely.

Where I live, we have time-of-use electricity rates.This is my second timer purchase, the first one lasted nine years.When I installed the first one, using the timer for two and a half hours every morning in off-prime time saved me close to a dollar a day. Under three months for payback? Any person should jump at that kind of savings.We only ever ran out of hot water at Christmas and Thanksgiving, when the house was full of visiting family. Press the override button, wait a bit, and all is good. Easy to install, if the power goes out, you will have to reset the time, not a big deal. We have a 60 gallon tank, just so I'm not hiding anything.
