Design size 16" x 21 ½" (40. 5cm x 54. 5cm) when worked on 14 count Aida fabric. The road to Bo Sang village is lined with handicraft emporiums. Bo Sang itself is a handicrafts village selling all styles of souvenirs but specializing in parasols. The village has earned renown for the art of parasol making for more than 200 years. Nobody knows why parasols are found in this particular village or from where the craft originated. It is widely speculated that the skill originated in China, but who brought it to Chiang Mai and for what purpose is a mystery. In legend, it is said that a Buddhist monk on pilgrimage to Sipsong Panna, which now forms a part of Yunnan Province in China, learned about the art which he brought back with him on his return to the green fields and hills of Lanna (former name of Chiang Mai). This parasol was made entirely of Saa (mulberry bark) paper, attached with rubber and suffused or coated with oil to help repel both sunshine and rain in many different sizes totally hand painted with colorful flowers and beautiful landscape scenes of various kinds. Bo Sang parasols then have been transformed into one of the symbols of Chiang Mai, Thailand.
