Patterns of Power has changed the game of teaching conventions in the younger grades! The way my students write after teaching this way has changed tremendously. It has also changed the way they read; they are reading to find mentor sentences to copy in their writing! I would highly recommend this book to you if you are struggling to get your students to use conventions appropriately.

This resource is worth every penny if you are using mentor sentences to teach grammar. The lessons are clearly laid out, and provide suggested talking points for teaching. Highly recommended. My fourth graders are very engaged with the process of evaluating sentences and noticing the patterns.

Not only is this book full of fantastic ways to make abstract grammatical concepts more concrete and accessible for young writers, it's also designed to deepen the teacher's conceptual understanding in ways that honor all learners-- even the grown-up ones. If you think "progressive tense" means someone named Flo is trying to angrily sell you insurance, then this is definitely the book for you!

I love how the mini lessons are set up. I love the specific feedback on different grammar patterns. The list of mentor texts is fabulous as well.
