Easy Layout Tool For Cutting Stair Stringers - Perfect Stairs

This tool really took a lot of the guesswork out of building stairs. I used it to build 3 large stringers for my deck, 4 small ones for the landing, and even a small staircase for my dogs in the house. I only really had 2 issues. The first was that it didn't come with printed instructions, and it was a little tricky watching the video on my computer while trying to mark the wood. Not the end of the world though. Once you get the hang of it, you don't need to refer back to the instructions very often. The second issue is the same as other reviewers noted, where the instructions on the last step are a little confusing. You need to fully draw your last step, THEN do the marks for the end. I almost ruined a 2x12 before I counted and realized I was one step short. I would highly recommend this for anyone who wants a quick and easy way to build "perfect stairs".

Home owner not a carpenter so I thought this would work great for someone not knowing what he was doing.It did work very well. Took some playing with. First set of stair stingers I ever built. Turned out pretty good.I laid out each stringer one at a time, not use my first stinger as a template.I would recommend it but if i was to do it again, beings I already had a Square, probably would have just bought the 3/4 in. Brass Stair Gauges stops.

Like most weekend warriors, I usually buy an extra board when doing stairs because I know the first one will be wrong and it is "practice". I saw this easy layout tool and decided to give it a try. I was changing over my deck stairs from 7 steps and short of the landing pad to 8 steps and dead center of pad. I had nothing to trace so it was new, by hand.I watched the on-line video several times to get the start correct then out the backyard I went. I did the first stringer, cut and held my breath as my son and I put it up to the deck. Shocked it actually fit and was correct! First time I have ever gotten it right with the first board!I am a weekend hack. I can do most things rough but not a finish carpenter by any stretch and always struggle with these types of things. I love this tool!

They work really great the only downfall is you can't put in the distance of run so the total run of your stairs is just whatever they tell you

I decided to build a deck for the 1st time. This wasn’t an easy deck either, almost 10ft off the ground. The first thing that I worried about was the stair stringers. After doing some research, I stumbled in to the perfect stairs tool. Once you watch the video, it is very easy to treacle your desired stair pattern. It’s made out of a hard plastic that seems will last a while as long as you do not abuse it.Seriously, if I can build my own stairs, any one can. This is the tool for you!

I love the design of this tool (stair calculator) and feel it's a great investment. Unfortunately, like Jethro's comment a while back, I received it today with one of the holes not cut out. This is something that good quality control could check for just prior to shipping. The box was also open in my mailbox and had not been taped shut. So, though I believe the tool is a potential 5 star, Quality control does need some work before I can offer such a review. I will be returning it as soon as I can figure out how.

This tool is outstanding, simple to use and layout your stringers. Great online video instructions and layout format. If you have problems understanding, you have a tech number to call. Very honest and helpful company.

This tool saved me big time this weekend!!! I suck when it comes to working with wood but ordered this anyway because I had a feeling that my stairs for my front porch would be just like everything else in my house, a one off build that nothing off the shelf would work for and I was right. So I pulled the tool out watched the video, bought some 2x12's, said a prayer, and gave it a shot as I was out of options. To my amazement It actually worked, but like an other reviewer said the video is a little confusing when it comes to marking the last step. I almost ruined the piece of wood but I watched it and re counted how many steps I needed and figured out you have to completely draw the last step then do what to do to end the steps. Like I said I suck at working with wood and it took me all day and part of the night but I now have a beautiful and strong set of steps.
