An OK read but sometimes you get lost
I'm seeing the new musical on Broadway I'm a couple of months so thought I'd read the book.Honestly, I expected more from a "classic". Quite often I found myself wondering if I'd missed a page, or even a chapter. I don't mind the jumping around characters, but please tell me who we're talking about!

Meh. Don't really see why this is considered a must-read
This one took me quite a while to get into and I think if I had been forced to read it for school I definitely would've struggled to get through it. My favourite part of this book was the way that the author described everything. From Mr Gatsby's house and his parties to the times they were in New York, everything was detailed in such rich depth that at times I felt like I was there in 1925. I haven't seen the movie adaptation and I knew very little about the storyline so the plot twists towards the end were quite shocking. I don't see why this is considered a must-read and I really struggled to connect with any of the characters in a way that made me care about what happened to them.

clearly superb
I wouldn’t give a book such as this anything less than 5 stars. Not necessarily my favourite but certainly I will come back to again and again over the years. Brilliant

Hard Work.
The book was physically excellent, but the content was (of course) dated i.e. the language was `stilted' in the sense that you have to `translate it' into a modern familiar form to suit the mental imagery with which we people our imaginations. This is hard work and distracts from the aim of the author to entertain the reader with glimpses of how the people he has imagined think and react to the situations he places them in. I soon found that this process of `mastication' was not worth the effort (some steaks or just too tough). There are lots of more enjoyable books or maybe I am just too lazy for `classics'.
