Rumi: The Book of Love: Poems of Ecstasy and Longing

Love!
Rumi is one of the world's most famous poets, and his poetry is truly treasured across continents and cultures. This translation is a good one for American audience with a variety of differing religious views. One may read Rumi's poems as one's yearning to return to the divine or simply interpret it as the heart's yearning for one's true love. It's moving, simple, spiritual but not dogmatic and heartfelt imagery. I enjoy reading different interpretations of Rumi's work because his Sufi philosophy must be understood by the translator and from that personal understanding one translate them into various languages. As such we too as the readers can understand the poem and translate it into our hearts. Thoroughly enjoyed the book, recommended!

Well
Well if you have a sane girlfriend she will love this. But i obviously was dating a lunatic bc she said I was moving too fast and that she loves the book. Then she dumped me. So you judge it.

Poetry? No thanks...Oh unless it's Rumi By Barks - that's High Vibe!
Didn't much like "poetry" before this. In fact this is the first book of 'poetry' i've not pelted into the bin.Oh, don't get me wrong, I'm a reader...oh yes. I have (no doubt like you) walls of books, all ordered by how much I ADORED them. And no book ever into the bin - sacrilege! Except poetry. Why? "Oh poetry is just such grandiose swashbuckling twaddle!"Well who knows what I read or if it really was grandi-gross. What I do know is that I LOVE RUMI. AND I LOVE COLEMAN BARKS (now I know who the hell they both are).I've started a new little book shelf. It's called HIGH VIBRATORY. It ONLY for books that are INSPIRED (of such outstanding beauty that its inarguable that pure-positive-non-physical-source energy played a role in their emergence). These books are those that I'm going back to, over and over, because of the sheer joy and exhilaration that's swell in my heart as I read them. Rumi The Book Of Love sits prominently on this fabulous new shelf.Go on, buy it, devour it. I defy anyone not to want to marry this book. Or at least position it on a High Vibratory shelf...

Coleman Barks' Rumi is a transporting and profound experience. Its beauty has brought me to tears
Whenever I read Coleman Barks, I remind myself that I'm reading more Coleman Barks than actual Rumi. Other, truer translations of Rumi are not at all like Mr. Barks' bite-sized pieces of perfect English imagery.Taken for what it is, Coleman Barks' Rumi is a transporting and profound experience. Its beauty has brought me to tears at times.

Book edges are cut wrong
The book arrived defective. The edge of it is not smooth. It won’t interfere with the reading but it doesn’t look like “all in good shape book”

Rumi the Unifier
I recommend this book to everyone. Rumi's poems offer a look at Iranian culture that we rarely see. What is important to remember is that Rumi was a poet, a spiritualist, a sufi and a devout and well-schooled Sunni Muslim. He was never divorced from his religion and we do him a disservice when we try to pretend that his spiritual quest is different from the formal teachings of his religion. His is a message of Love; his poems are a gift to all, no matter whether we embrace a formal religion or not.

cleansing of the soul
The poems and the translation are beautiful. Its cleansing of the soul. Will read now more of rumi. And more of sufism.

Delivers what the title promises. And then some...
The Book of Love, in Mr. Barks' rendering, is deeply curative. Not only is the wording 'like magic', with each word accurately and precisely in the exact right place and the right cadence, making the unity into something truly special, but there is a deep aesthetic beauty that also works to the same avail: to jolt joy and vitality into our human heart, reminding the reader that what is humain in us has been, and will be, fundamentally the same - it's love. While only barbaric and marginal definitions can be attempted by rushing reviewers, love's ineffable qualities are best put into words by Rumi's fine spun. I must recommend this read to anyone who's ever loved.
