Do you have to take off the controller straps to put these on and how secure are they when locked on.

Yes, you have to remove the straps. The attachment sticks come with their own straps. It's pretty secured. My son plays gorilla tag where he swings his arms around and I don't see any issue with it

Not sure I can say that the handle extentions are kind of long. Sometimes I don't need them but they do come in handy when playing Beat Saber.
