Renzo and Royler Gracie have proved themselves time and time again on the freefight circuit. Whether you are new to ground fighting and want to learn, or a Judo player looking to expand or even a seasoned vet like myself this book is the one to have. It has a good History section explaining fully the Theory and Background of Jiu Jitsu and is fully Illustrated with easy-to-understand sequential Photos. Each Photo has a write up explaining hand positioning, body postioning and movement. By the time you have finished the book, having gone through all blue, purple, brown and black belt techniques, you will be well versed in controlling your opponent from the top, side and bottom positions as well as be able to finish the fight from all of these positions. This book is fantastic. Review: A very good book for beginers - I've just started BJJ although I've trained in Martial Arts before. Although the techniques in BJJ don't require any great amount of power or years of training to perform (unlike some of the punching/kicking arts), they are quite technical (and there are lots of them). I find this book a good reference book to refresh the techniques in my mind after a session. Probably no good to someone who has trained for years, but for interested parties or beginers like me its a good book. Its a well written book, put together with lots of clear pictures with key parts of the techniques highlighted.

Excellent for beginners
easy to follow, well written. You cannot get a better beginners book on brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, the techniques are fundamentals that give you a really good base to go on and work out a game for yourself. Really, really good.

good for beginners
I bought this book and the pictures and explanations are easy to understand. I have just started jiu-jitsu and on my 3rd lesson I managed to apply a submission from the book on a less than happy fairly experienced (2yrs) practitioner in the sparring part of the lesson.

I think this is one of the best BJJ books you can buy. I bought this over 20 years ago when I first started BJJ and just bought another one to share with others at the Dojo. It has all the basic Gracie BJJ moves. The photos are great and the moves well explained. John Danaher is a co-author and his thoughtful input as seen in his Youtube videos comes through in this book. I am a 2nd degree black belt and I still look through this book now and then to revisit some of the classic moves in this book

At 255 pages, this volume on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu eclipses virtually every other book on the topic. The amount of knowledge is superb, the presentation is terrific. Color photography throughout, an average of 6-10 photos per technique (including close-ups), and easily understood narrative descriptions which cover not just how to move, but why to do certain "little things" that make the difference between an effective technique and wasted energy. Although this book groups techniques by belt (recommended knowledge from white to blue, purple, brown, and black), authors Renzo and Royler Gracie, John Danaher, and Peligro describe rank in BJJ as an informal proceedure which does not include formal tests or specific techniques required, but rather continuous displays of proficient application and understanding which can be gleaned only through continuous and dedicated practice. It seems that BJJ, with its emphasis on ability rather than (buying) belts, is where other martial arts in the US, Canada, and Japan were 40 or more years ago. The only omission I can think of would be tournament rules for BJJ, but that again is something one would pick up from going to tournaments and classes regularly. This book is a terrific value, the best of the grappling books on the market today, in my estimation. A quality product well worth the asking price. I hope there is a volume II somewhere in the works, maybe even a biography of the Gracie family (looong overdue!). My other recommendation for those with an interest in NHB / MMA history would be the recently published "Brawl" by Erich Krauss. Good reading & good practice to you!
