Product Description Raise fish and grow plants in the FishPlant enclosed ecosystem to eat or enjoy, the choice is yours. It is an ecologically-friendly method of producing nourishing, healthy food which is also educational and fun for the whole family. FishPlant was created by experts and designed for everyone. New and exclusive to ; the innovative FishPlant 'Total Care' systems of aquaponic food production are a single purchase package containing everything you need to begin your journey of raising edible or ornamental fish and the growing of food for consumption. FishPlant is the first commercially available aquaponic system with a range of supporting consumables. The FishPlant Family and Production units are the first of their kind within the UK holding their own unique place in the market and benefit from having been developed in combination with leading universities and horticultural companies. The FishPlant 'Total Care' range brings hydroponics, aquaculture and education to your home. This is how it works: you feed the fish with the specially-designed food provided and the fish produce waste which goes into the water. The waste water is pumped through a pebble plant bed that cleans the water for the fish and so the fish get fresh oxygenated water. The waste water sits in the pebble bed feeding the beneficial bacteria, which in turn feeds the plants, allowing them to flourish and feed you and your family! The Plant Bed of the FishPlant system is based on the 'Flood & Drain' hydroponic technique - the 'Flood' bringing water and nutrients to the plant's roots, the 'Drain' drawing fresh air (oxygen) into the root zone. It is ideal for growing your favourite herbs and salad crops. The design ensures constant water circulation and helps oxygenate the water for the fish. The FishPlant Family Unit is a great way to get started with aquaponics; large enough to provide a couple or small family with plenty of fresh salad and stocking up to 3.5kg of fish, yet small enough to fit into a small garden, greenhouse or even indoors. Compact and easy to use, it is also ideal as a nursery system or a module in a larger setup. The low height of the system makes it very accessible and simple to operate and maintain. The package includes everything necessary to setup and maintain the system including: the clay pebbles, the fish food (for young and older fish) the fish care kit, plant care kit and pH care kit, all of which help you to foster the perfect environment for your fish and food. Full build instructions and an operation guide are also included. Because of the compact design, the fish tank and grow bed can be manoeuvred through normal doorways. The FishPlant units operate on a 'Flood and Drain' system with an auto siphon which provides efficient, low maintenance operation. What species of fish can I farm? This depends on whether you intend to eat them or just keep them for pleasure. While the principle of aquaponics is primarily to grow food, it may be that you prefer to grow ornamental fish, such as, Koi Carp or Goldfish and just eat the plant produce. If you want to farm edible varieties then, you can successfully and consistently farm Tilapia, Carp, Perch and (with practice) even Trout. To find out more go to www.fishplant.co.uk. The design isn't as well thought out as it should be.
The design isn't as well thought out as it should be.The media floats and lifts the mesh filter off the syphon which clogs and stops working. The syphon also becomes slightly tilted as the media bed base sags, so it starts unevenly. The instructions are not comprehensive and have some errors/omissions, so some prior reading on aquaponics and DIY skills become necessary as you set up the system.

Some prior knowledge of aquaponics is required!
Bought this kit 3 years ago when I was new to aquaponics...simple to fit together, however...once you fill it with the clay pebbles media , water , plants and fish, the design faults require a lot of work! I had to make filter housings out of upside down plastic waste paper baskets to stop the media entering the bell-siphons; the holes that let the water run back down into the tank were situated too near to the tank edge, I had to divert the flow back towards the holding tank with 'mud flaps' made from laminated card sheets; in hot weather the media beds sagged, as did the fish holding tank because black plastic gets very hot in the sun, had to paint outside white and put up shades; frame is quite flimsy and unsupportive needs beefing up a bit; I recommend using air stone for fish 24/7, dont use in a greenhouse, put the system on a timer, ALWAYS keep at least half the grow beds planted up, expect sciarid fly, use a thermometer for the fishes sake! Dont go on holiday and leave this running unsupervised! Needs daily monitoring to check siphons are clear. Would buy another one of these now I have been through this because they produce tons of lovely produce!
