Fast-paced, gripping, and unputdownable!
An awesome sequel to Hunter and Higashi's first adventure. More suspense, more danger, and new characters entering the fray. It was really hard to put this one down, and will be even harder to wait for the next instalment, which I'm already really excited about! :)

Another good read in the series
The Hunter and Higashi series is a great YA read. This one continues on the conspiracy theory that there was something larger at play in the first book. Well written, this gripping tale continues building the main characters from the previous novel while introducing new characters. Recommend this book!

The Osaka Syndicate: A Gripping Tale of Young Detectives in Japan
"The Osaka Syndicate" is the riveting sequel to the adventures of Jessica Hunter and Kenta Higashi, two young detectives who first captured readers' attention with their daring exploits in uncovering a sinister plot at their school. In this latest installment, the stakes are dramatically raised as our protagonists find themselves entangled in a web of intrigue that extends far beyond the confines of their educational institution. The story masterfully weaves together the disappearance of a computer savant with the earlier school-based conspiracy, revealing a tapestry of malevolence that is both chilling and enthralling. As Jessica and Kenta delve deeper into the mystery, readers are drawn into a world where danger lurks around every corner, and the true scope of the threat slowly comes into focus. One of the most striking aspects of "The Osaka Syndicate" is its ability to transcend the typical boundaries of young adult fiction. Despite featuring teenage protagonists, the narrative tackles complex themes and intricate plot lines that will engage readers of all ages. The author's skillful storytelling creates a sense of genuine peril and high stakes that keeps the pages turning.A standout feature of the book is its rich, immersive portrayal of Japanese culture. The author's attention to detail transports readers to the streets of Osaka, offering a vivid sensory experience that goes beyond mere backdrop. From the bustling cityscape to the nuanced social interactions, every element feels authentic and adds depth to the story. The character development of Jessica and Kenta is particularly noteworthy. As they face increasingly dangerous situations, we see them grow not just as detectives, but as individuals grappling with the weight of their discoveries. Their partnership is a highlight of the book, showcasing the strength that comes from teamwork and trust."The Osaka Syndicate" is a testament to the author's ability to craft a compelling mystery that is both intellectually stimulating and emotionally resonant. It builds upon the foundation laid in the first book, expanding the world and raising the stakes in ways that feel organic and exciting. For readers who enjoy intricate plots, cultural exploration, and young protagonists facing adult challenges, "The Osaka Syndicate" is a must-read. A book worth reading.
This book is a sequel to “ A curse in Kyoto” and continues the story arc. The characters are engaging. The plot is sufficiently complex to keep your interest. What I like is that it doesn’t fall into that familiar, yet, overused situation where the two lead characters solve a mystery as they form a romantic relationship. I’m not sure if that will happen in the future but, at least at the present time the author has cleverly avoided that boring trope.I would recommend this book, with the caveat that you should read the first book in the series. The second book takes great pains to set out sufficient information so that the story can stand on its own. However, I think it really makes better sense to read both books in proper order to get the nuance and depth to the storyline. This review was based upon a pre-released complementary copy submitted by the author.

Fascinating Mystery in modern day Japan outside of Tokyo
“The Osaka Syndicate” is the sequel to "A Curse in Kyoto,” also by SJ Cullen. As a native Japanese who has experienced many of the locations in the book, I was quite impressed with the accuracy and realism in the descriptions of these places and the surrounding culture. I thoroughly enjoyed this unique and fascinating mystery, and the writing had me feeling as if I were there with the characters.Jessica and Kenta attend an international high school in Kyoto, Japan when they begin a murder investigation that leads them to many places in Kyoto and Osaka. They pursued the Syndicate through many famous venues, such as Yasaka Shrine, Gion, Ame Mura (American Village), Abenoharukas (Skyscraper complex), and Osaka Castle. They also travel to a Pachinko parlor, local restaurants, and small shopping areas that detail local foods and daily events vividly.I enjoyed reading it very much and highly recommend it to mystery lovers and anyone interested in a realistic depiction of modern day Japan outside of Tokyo. I received a complimentary pre-release copy and I’m reviewing it voluntarily.

I couldn't put the book down
I wrote this review based on an advance reading copy that the publisher sent me. I could not put this book down. Once I got started, I stayed up really late to finish. I was interested in the first book by the location in Japan and enjoyed it so much I had to read the second. Historical Japan is one of my interests. Strong female characters like Jessica and Carmen always piques my interest. Go, Girls! The story kept me reading to find out who the villain was, what their real goal was, and how they planned to accomplish it. Kept me hooked until the end. I highly recommend it for a good escape and a fun read.

Mystery in Japan
The Osaka Syndicate is an easy read, well suited for teens and young adults. I do not fall into this age demographic. Still, I found the characters very interesting and the reader gets an insight into the psyche of the teenaged student in Japan. The colorful descriptions of Japan, especially Osaka and Kyoto, can delight anyone who loves the country. This review was based on a complimentary pre-release copy.

Sparks of brilliance!
An excellent sequel, even better than book 1. The character development has been done well and the small touches show an immense amount of research has gone into the writing of this book. There are so many moments where it grabs you and pulls you in, the plot builds up at a steady pace and before you know it you’re hooked! The baddies are very well written too, who doesn’t like a bad baddie?! The inclusivity is appreciated, as are the relevant educational moments (ain’t leaving my laptop open again!). Looking forward to book 3 set in London.

promises to be a great series
read both books in this series over 3 nights did not want to put them down dont let the young adult tag put you off. book one was moody and creepy and this book takes off a few months after the first book ended and is a more fast paced action based high school detective thriller with likeable characters. I cant wait for book 3

Excellent sequel
Having read the first book about our two intrepid young sleuths, I'm looking forward to reading this follow-up 👌It didn't disappoint. A gripping read again. Looking forward to the third in the series. I wonder how the pair will get on, with their roles reversed in terms of cultural and linguistical knowledge 🤔It should be interesting.
