Excellent book filled with insights and evidence
As a physician and writer I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Dr. Shapiro laid out each major issues in a clear, and easy-to-understand way, with great examples from her clinical practice. I was also impressed with how each chapter was organized: she opens the chapter with some very common questions, while ending the chapter with take-home points. Much of this information is changing as new research comes in, and it's enough to make all of our heads spin. This is a must-read book to get up to speed on where we are now, and where we are headed.

This is an important read.... There ...
This is an important read.... There is so much hype and misinformation out there -- especially about our diet choices, supplements, and medicines. I hear valid concerns every day from my own patients, unable to sift through the crazy information and extreme scenarios they find via Google. Enter Dr Shapiro... I wish every patient and friend could read this book before heading into the "wild west" of the internet/media/social conversation surrounding food and health advice."Hype" is informative, practical, and broad enough to speak on many levels to anyone living today. It addresses our questions in a straightforward manner and respects the reader's intelligence, supporting comments and claims with evidence from research and medical knowledge. I particularly appreciate the chapter on aging, addressing hormone replacement, sunscreens, and "anti-aging" claims of topical treatments.... There is so much money in the anti-aging industry, and so much willingness on our part as consumers to try anything with a claim that it might work; Rarely is someone taking time to sift through the claims and ferret out the misinformation. Thank you, Dr Shapiro!!!

YES!!! On behalf of your Family Physician, PLEASE READ THIS BOOK!
Not ten minutes into reading HYPE, I wanted to stand up and CHEER. THANK YOU, Dr. Shapiro, for taking the time, energy, dedication and effort to put into writing what so many of us in primary care spend ALL DAY sharing with our patients! Obviously our 15-30 minute visits contain a small fraction of the info in this book, which is why I'm telling you PLEASE buy and read and learn from this fabulous collection of myth-busting medical TRUTHS. My biggest frustration with social media is that all voices seem equal...or maybe just the LOUDEST voices seem the "best", but in reality, a google search does not equal years of research nor practice. Please everyone, QUESTION what you hear. Do not take advice from your friend, or Facebook or a website as gospel truth. The "facts" are NOT equal. Evidence-based medicine is teaching ALL of us that not everything we do has equal outcomes. Just because we've always used cough syrup to treat coughs doesn't mean it is effective shortening the course of a cold, and we don't need antibiotics every time snot is green. Treat yourself to some REAL medical information that will help YOU to sort through all the HYPE. Thank you, Dr. Shapiro! I'd love to meet you some day, but for now, please accept my virtual HIGH FIVE for this wonderful book!

Interesting read, some things you knew and some you didn't. Makes you step back and think about food and products you use.
