National Wildlife Federation Field Guide to Wildflowers of North America

Excellent Comprehensive Guide
This is an excellent guide for identification of wildflowers. An argument could be made that the best feature of this book is the range maps that accompany the various flower species - the only other place to relatively easily obtain such information is through the USDA website and you need to search by genus then get a set of species range maps - not so helpful for browsing or in the field.Typically 2, 3, or 4 closely related species are presented together with pictures of each and range maps for each. There is a treasure trove of pictures to assist in identification and most are very, very good - if a bit small. Descriptive and identification information is also somewhat thin for the various species. Both the somewhat small pictures and dearth of identifying information can be overlooked easily, though, given the absolutely vast number of species covered and number of color photographs. If you want to identify wildflowers primarily from pictures, this book just can't be beat.I would highly recommend this book for wildflower identification - I have a lot of wildflower books but nothing compares to this for overall value and comprehensiveness. The wealth of pictures and comprehensive coverage of species coupled with the extremely low price makes this book an exceptional value; frankly, given the quality of the paper and printing as well as the nearly 700 page size, I am amazed they can even print the book for the price they are selling it for - the book would be a good value at double the price.

It's ok for a big field guide as long as you are in the contiguous United States
The title is inaccurate. I purchased this guide as an additional field reference for identifying wildflowers in Alaska. Except, it only covers flowers in the contiguous lower 48 states of the United States. Not much from Alaska, Canada, Mexico, or Central America. It's been fairly useless for flowers in our region, which is still North America.

A Good Comprehensive Guide
The book is a good all-around one, but a bit overwhelming. I bought the book mainly because the front part divides the flowers by colors which I thought would be very helpful. But often it will show just one of the colors and doesn't includes others. So if you see a pink flower and they show it in blue it might be a little more difficult to identify. The maps of where the flowers are found are very helpful. The flower descriptions well done. The book itself is thick thus making it a little difficult to carry around as a field guide. It's best left home as a reference tool.

Great book for the range that it covers.
This book is outstanding. It covers a huge range but has enough information and diversity of species to make it useful everywhere. It won't always have the species that you're looking for but it has enough to at least get you more than just in the ballpark. It's not a technical book and a basic understanding of plant familes will help the user navigate through the vast number of species presented.I hope the NWF reprints this book because there are no equal options out there. The price of this book can get insane when there are few available used copies on the market.

No Dandelion Look Alikes
Although this is a wonderful book, it lacks the one thing for which I bought it: dandelion look-a-likes. I am interested in discovering the identities and uses of numerous dandelion-like plants in my garden, but this book states in the dandelion section that it doesn't cover that topic. This disappointed me, but otherwise, it's a fine handbook, and I will use it often.

Excellent wildflower guide.
The best wildflower guide I’ve found. Accurate information with very good, clear images and good range maps. Much better than the Audubon guide.

Awesome Book for Lovers of Wildflowers
A compact but heavy little book-zillions of photos of wildflowers and excellent descriptions. This is one of the books my homeschooled son checked out of the library that we ended up going on Amazon and purchasing. Well-worth the price, and a permanent personal library reference.

Très bel aperçu de la flore nord-américaine, à petit prix
Bien illustré, ce livre donne un beau panorama de la flore nord-américaine. Le prix est serré : c'est un livre de petit format mais épais, malgré le papier mince...
