Lovely - Split personality?
I enjoyed this a lot as a recent transplant to South Carolina (5 years ago - a tiny blip in 'southern' time) after picking it up at the local library. The photos are well done and fun, and the descriptions are like short-short stories. I wish it was either:a) A coffee table book with large, artistic photos and less emphasis on descriptions; or,b) A travel book with a map and groupings by location.Instead, this is a fairly small book, just under 6" x 9", so photo size is very limited, and groupings seem pretty whimsical. Not that that's a bad thing, but a map with locations indexed to the essays would have been so welcome. Maybe I could have planned a few days excursions looking for what he saw and presented so enticingly.

A master storyteller takes you back in time
Tom Poland has a remarkable talent for finding stories where you might least expect them. Instead of sticking to the interstates, Tom takes the blue highways and dares drive down dirt roads to abandoned barns, burned-out homes and other relics of a past we need to remember.Ill admit to being a fan of many years.Tom's writing about his wanderings has inspired my wife and me to take our own serendipitous trips.

No navigational help
I have lived in South Carolina for 5 years and had not heard of most of the towns nor roads. No clue as to location/county etc. The book was written by/for someone with the intimate knowledge of all the nooks and crannies of the state, not a tourist. You would have to go to Google maps for some help and other places for the rest. Book is written more like a personal diary, not a travel guide.
