Reliable
I have owned one of these for over 40 years, and it is still as good as the day I bought it. I also have a digital caliper (Mitutoyo, obviously) but this is my go-to instrument for most work. Quick, reliable, and well built. It will last for more than your lifetime. Others want a case for it- not needed. It can take the knocks of everyday use, does not need to be treated as delicate.

Analog Caliper for a lifetime
*Pros:-Analogue reading, no need for batteries and/or electronics that cannot be repaired.-Excellent built quality.-Metric and Imperial scaling, usefule everywhere on the world.*Cons:-Cheap plastic holster and cardboard box.My brother asked me to buy him a caliper, he wanted something durable, that won't break down easily, and that doesn't need batteries, enters Mitutoyo to the rescue.Nowadays every has something digital, that needs batteries and that cannot be easily repaired, but this analog caliper is timeless as is precise, durable and built to last even beyond your own life if you're careful enough.Comes with Imperial and Metric scaling, which is wonderful, specially in my country where both are used extensively, easy to read, easy to manipulate.Sadly it comes with a very cheap plastic holster and inside a cheap cardboard box as well, at this quality level I would have expected at least a more robust cardboard box with padded foam for protection.

The classic vernier
I already own this same caliper with only inch markings. I prefer that one for most work, because it makes identifying inch fractions extremely easy. In my current work, I see about equal inch and metric, so this was the way to go. I find the scale more complicated and tiring to read than the inch fraction one, but it is completely satisfactory. These are smooth running, with crisp accuracy, and the thumbwheel makes fine measurement convenient. For fast reads and productivity, digital is the way to go. I work as a mobile technician, and want something that can sit in the toolbag, never run out of batteries or slip a gear, and always be ready to go.These can be a little tight at first. I put some oil in the slide every once in a while, and wipe out any debris. Over time the mating surfaces will burnish and the tool will feel extremely smooth.
