NOT FOR CHILDREN
This anime is awesome in that it’s atmospheric, a true adventure and it has an evocative and beautiful soundtrack, but looks can be deceiving. Don’t let the cute and unassuming art style fool you. This program is DARK. As a hardcore anime fan who knew beforehand what I was getting into, I enjoyed the heck out of this, and as long as you’re informed you very well may too, but I’d advise against blindly gifting this to the young anime fan in your life. Also be aware, this is NOT the complete series, merely the first season, but of course you need to watch this if you intend on getting into the series.

Everything You Could Want Out of An Adventure Anime
I was skeptical of Made in Abyss when I first heard of it. It was getting unanimous praise across the board, with critics and fans alike gushing over its animation, characters, world, basically everything about it. Having finally watched it, I can finally confirm something; does it live up to the hype? Yeah, yeah it does.Made in Abyss takes place in a world where a large, mysterious chasm known as the Abyss exists. The Abyss is an enigmatic location filled with bloodthirsty monsters and a curse that begins to eat away at people the further down you go, resulting in severe injuries or even death. While the Abyss is dangerous, brave adventurers called "cave raiders" journey into it hoping to find treasures so that they might accrue fame and fortune and also benefit mankind. Our protagonist is a 12 year old girl named Riko who aspires to become a cave raider like her mother, who years prior to the story disappeared into the Abyss. While exploring the upper layer of the Abyss, Riko meets an amnesiac robot boy and names his Reg. Riko and Reg decide to embark on a dangerous journey into the Abyss in search of answers, namely what became of Riko's mother and where Reg came from.I won't spoil what happens, but the story of Made in Abyss will make you feel all sorts of emotions. Fear, anger, sadness, joy, and an insatiable appetite to learn more about this mysterious world these characters inhabit. Riko and Reg have a great rapport, and their developing relationship is a major selling point of the plot. Reg is the budding warrior who must protect himself and Riko, while Riko is the explorer aching to learn as much as she can about this world despite all the ways it wants to kill her. By the time the show ends, they've both been through the wringer emotionally and physically. The theme of friendship is handled quite well here. One thing this show does exceptionally well is its world building. While the Abyss is dangerous and frequently terrifying, the art direction and color used in its design is frequently breathtaking. The Abyss at times feels like a character in and of itself, displaying terrors and beauty in equal measure. Everything from the physical landscape to the environmental hazards to the designs of the monsters, everything shown in the Abyss feels like it was meticulously crafted; as alien as it is, the Abyss often feels like a believable place. The soundtrack of the show also shines. The show's score was composed by a young Australian composer named Kevin Penkin (it's kind of cool to see an anime score done by a non-Japanese composer). Mr. Penkin did an excellent job at creating tracks that vary from hauntingly beautiful to ominous and threatening. The score compliments the themes of the show, reminding us that the Abyss is both extremely dangerous and oddly beautiful at the same time. I hope to see Mr. Penkin get more high-profile gigs, because he knocked this out of the park.I also like that the Blu-ray features a good amount of behind the scenes features to enjoy, from learning of the show's inception to seeing how the score was created. Anime Blu-rays can often be barebones in terms of special features, so I was glad that this particular Blu-ray delivered for once.If you haven't made up your mind about this show, I urge you to take a chance on it. Just look at everything you get out of this; fantastic visuals, a beautiful orchestral soundtrack, a well-designed world and lore, endearing characters that you start to love, and a mystery that you'll want to come back to and watch unfold. This show is beautiful, heartwarming, heartbreaking, terrifying, and at times hilarious. It's one of the most complete anime I've ever seen.

Absolutely LOVE this series!!
Blu-ray arrived on time and as described. Comes with special features (see pictures for details). It's a series about a girl (Riko) with a strong desire to explore the Abyss. A huge pit that descends seemingly to the center of the earth. Within it are artifacts and unnatural creatures of all sorts. Most of which find creative ways to lure and consume raiders like her. It is easy to descend but the pit itself is hostile due to a strange force that causes severe symptoms in humans that ascend too quickly. Follow Riko and her amnesiac robot Reg in a search for her mother in the depths!!

Great Series - not a young kid show
This is a loved series in my family. The story, the twists and turns to the plot that are in no way predictable. The elaborate backgrounds and creative creatures are very interesting. The sound is amazing. We are sound fanatics, buying the movies means you get the high quality sound. Buying the series through the couple common websites (crunchy/ funimation) you get 2 channel or maybe 2.1 channel. This plays 7.1 channel sound on the Marantz system. No quality loss due to remixing . Bass and treble are still present and subwoofer rumbles like it should. It starts like a kindergarten show but it gets wilder after a couple episodes that set things up (40 to 60 mins into movies). The most recent episodes of the scorching sun still not a movie yet. 2023

Into The Abyss
Triumph and despair await those brave enough to face the Abyss. For myself Made In Abyss is one of my favorite anime from the decade spanning 2010 through 2019. It takes a hard look at adventuring with all it's dangers while still maintaining a sense of wonder at it all. The animation is sharp and fluid with amazing landscapes. The voice acting both subbed and dubbed is top notch. And the music is both haunting and memorizing at the right moments. But what is Made In Abyss. It's the story of two young adventurers going down into the Abyss in search of Riko's mother who is waiting for her I'm the abyss. The Abyss is a seemingly unconquerable pit filled with layer after of different environments each one more dangerous than the last. Despite many attempting to uncover what lays at it's bottom none have done so and returned to tell the tale. It's a great tale with some heavy hitting emotional moments, don't expect a feel good story here. Still if you're a looking for a journey filled with adventure, then give it a shot I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. Now if only we could get a second season. -MickManga

An incredible experience
I had already seen this anime before it was released in bluray, but I do believe it is good enough to take the time to review it. First off, it's one of the best soundtracks I've ever seen in any animes in my opinion. The story is also incredibly rich and the style and animation are top notch. This anime has also been dubbed in english for those who don't like to read subtitles and I believe they have announced a second season along with movies, so even though this anime doesn't really have a real ending, worry not, more is on the way!I cannot recommend this enough! (The special edition is a bit pricy for what you get though, I'd stick with the bluray alone)
