Midnight Special [Blu-ray] [2016]

Watched for second time
I first watched this film a couple of years ago and it has stuck in my mind ever since. When I noticed the Blue-ray was £2.95 I had to buy it. Could not believe how quick 100+ minutes went. It was so engrossing I just forgot the time. No doubt it will be watched again in the near future. It is just a brilliant film. Well worth getting.

Too smart for its audience ?
With Numb/Hardcore blasting on the soundtrack Michael Mann launches you straight into the seething underworld in which vice cops Crockett (Colin Farrell) and Tubbs (Jamie Foxx) operate, without opening credits or a title banner, and goes on steadfastly to resist the convention of slowing down to introduce the audience to who and what they're watching. The high-definition video photography - dark, lustrous, sometimes faintly grainy like a high-quality pirate - compounds the film's strange flatness. The bottom line on the film is that is a very smart, tightly paced, action-packed police thriller with beautiful cinematography and great performances underscored by a compulsive tension that builds from frame 1 until the end of the movie. The bottom line on the public is that because the film is so unconventional and densely plotted, it left many of our Nascar-lovin' brethren in the dust. Too bad. They're all lined up to take shots at a film which can only be described as "boring" by a viewer who simply couldn't follow the bread crumbs. When the film was released I read dozens of posts by moviegoers who had no clue what was going on in the film. To be completely honest, it took me two or three viewings to really understand how certain plot points worked together. But the movie moves so quickly that even when the heroes remove their ski masks to show us, the audience, that they are the perpetrators of a drug heist, there were still many on the internet asking who was responsible for the drug heist. There is no excuse for that, other than simple viewers who were not paying attention. Again, this is a great film for people who will appreciate the clever, intelligent way director Michael Mann constructs the whole. This is not a great film for people looking for ticking alligators, goofy sidekicks, wacky informants and a Jan Hammer beat. This is a movie for grownups. The rest need not bother.Turn the sub titles on.

Too TV movie.....
As good as Michael Shannon, Joel Edgerton and Kirsten Dunst are, this felt a lot more like a TV movie than a full feature. Interesting story that unfortunately has been done before, the road movie will never go away. Not a fan of Adam Driver at all so his performance grated a little. One thing that annoyed me a lot was a silly mistake made by one character towards the end which this character would not have made. The last scene was clever though and well acted.

Midnight Snooze
I was so looking forward to this after missing it at the cinema. Great director, great actors and great story. Sadly, for me it became very confusing and very boring very quickly and I found myself losing interest. I stuck with it but ultimately it did nothing for me and I thought the ending was ridiculous. It's not totally tragic and does a few tense moments, but overall it's one to catch on Sky or a cheap dvd way down the line.

Wrong Partner ...
Passable movie, however, I thought the teaming of Colin Farrell with Jamie Foxx was totally the wrong choice. For me, Foxx didn't 'cut it' in the movie (the charismatic Blair Underwood would have been a much better choice to play Tubbs). I was a big fan of the iconic 80s series where Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas were the dream duo.The movie itself was just ok, but only because of Michael Mann's input -; and I've always enjoyed his work.If I wasn't a fan of the original series, would I have bought this dvd? ... Probably not!

Own this on DVD already.
Now own it on Blu-ray and it's got the 'always great Micheal Shannon' as main character lead. " Winner, winner chicken dinner. "

Sexy dancing
Loved it more than I expected. Wish they had done a follow up to expand the characterisation. Colin Farrell looks gorgeous and the dancing scene was way more sexy than the sex scenes.
