Not your typical Scottish highland story, but well worth the time to read
Chieftain is the story of a highland laird who has been imprisoned by the British under inhumane conditions for 7 years. When he was captured, his wife was pregnant with their first child. His marriage had been arranged by the British king, and although he did not love his wife, he did enjoy having her in his bed. In prison, he discovered his wife had been unfaithful to him with the heir to the British throne, and he did not know if the child he carried was his. He didn't know his wife had attempted to secure his release by pleasing the crown prince, hoping he would be merciful when his aging father died. Also unknown to him is that his wife was fleeing with their three month old son to the abbey where she was raised as an orphan and died shortly after arriving. Her twin sister adopts her identity, and although they look almost the same, they have very different personalities. During his years in prison, his "wife" moves with their son to the land the king has given them and builds a prosperous and thriving community, a feat he cannot believe his flighty, spoiled wife could accomplish. He knows something isn't right, but he doesn't know what. This book is the story of that laird, his young son and the "wife" he believes unfaithful. It is not an action-packed story, and it's not a story full of highland skirmishes and battles. It's a gentle, pleasant, easy read focused on the relationship between the laird and his "wife" and how he learns to be a parent to the son he's just met. It's also a story of how he rises above the horrid treatment he received and heals. Don't think this story is without its intrigue, though. There is quite a bit of it from the beginning, and it winds throughout the story, adding tension and uncertainty. The book is full of interesting characters, and the author did a good job of developing those characters, not only with descriptions but with their actions. The two lead characters are strong personalities, and the dance between them makes for good reading. I'll be looking for other books from this author.

One not to be missed
Drummond MacQueen, Chieftain of Clan MacQueen, falsely imprisoned for seven years. Finally released to seek revenge on his wife for cuckolding him with the King, is totally undone by the lady posing as his wife. Her sister, twins kept secret from everybody except a few, she takes her sister's place as she dies giving birth to Drummond's child of which he has no knowledge. On his release, with everybody thinking him dead, he arrives to find himself a father and married to somebody who completely befuddles him, it becomes one surprise after another leaving him angry and confused. Marion sets out to win his heart whilst keeping her sister's secrets and raising his child. He finds her challenging, witty and knows she is keeping secrets. He did not know his wife had a twin sister. A just delightful read, many a laugh, this book kept me reading for many more hours than I should have spared and I highly recommend it.

Good read!!!
I really liked this read. I did not like heroine throughout more than half of the book because she was a shrew and very cruel to the hero who had suffered very much for more than seven years. She was a liar to the extreme, which really made me dislike her all the more. That annoyed me because she no longer had to keep the secret any longer, because Edward I was dead, really, what could he do to her if she divulged the secret? I rated the book a five because I loved the hero and the story really was intriguing. Although the heroine was infuriating, I would recommend this read, it is really good.

Light hearted and enjoyable
I've read many highlander themed books by many authors such as Julie Garwood, Monica McCarty, Jullianne McLean, Maya Banks, and Margaret Mallory. This book as compared to the works of the above mentioned authors lacked the depth of characters, intrigue, and soul of being a highlander. However, it was still a light and enjoyable read that kept me interested from beginning to end, especially with it's little twist in plot. For this I give it four stars. I have found that books rated three are hard fir me to finish and this one most definitely was not!

Could've been an excellent read but
The blurb summarizes the book nicely, so I won't bother anybody with my recap. In any case, when I read the book's summary I considered it a good and entertaining read. However, the plot development didn't meet my expectations. Claire and Johanna's lineage was so thoroughly introduced and explained, that I actually expected the story to evolve around this or that the lineage would play a crucial role in the plot. Neither of this happened and this so carefully crafted thread just remained unexploited. The chemistry between the main characters somehow didn't work for me. Maybe this was because the book lacked atmosphere and ambience. Both main characters were portrayed as rather simplistic, their objectives and actions didn't persuade me at all. Bertie, but especially Sister Maragareth were imortant subcharacters, who could have added a twist to the plot, but besides a small appearance their characters remained shallow. Needless to refer to the pet-elephant...Sorry, didn't enjoy this book.

A different kind of Midevil romance
I liked how this romance novel is filled with mystery and an unlikely romance. I kept wanting Johanna to tell her "husband" the truth of who she was. She is filled with tenacity and more. Her "husband" knows she is not the woman he married but can't figure it out. He loves her and finds her different abilities most attractive. She knows one day she will have to tell him, but for now loves him and her life. I very much enjoyed the book and hope you do to.

Did not live up to the intro
If it wasn't for the kid and his antics this book would be a complete yawn. It had so much potential with the secrets of the twins and the king, not to mention the wrongfully imprisoned husband. However it got lost in this repetitive thought process between the two main characters. So many authors do this and its disappointing, they spend page after page saying the same thing over and over in different words. Then the way the secret was revealed, wow, sad sad.I'm giving it 3 stars because it is well written regardless.

A hero on an elephant!
The story line was enjoyable but spoilt by inclusion of an elephant! Whatever possessed the author to think that readers of historical ficture would accept that the hero would walked back into her life riding an elephant. Why was nobody frightened of it they weren't exactly common in England not even now. If you can accept the elephant and the lack of correct historical facts then enjoy.

not for me
The elephant was my first concern. Next came the claim that Edward the 2nd of England was king of Scotland. Bit of a slap in the face to Robert the Bruce. Wonder if anyone told him. While I readily accept that this is a non fictional novel. I do think that some facts cannot be played with, you need them as some sort of body to set the tale in place and time.
