The Doris You Didn’t Know - Not to Mention Rex Is Evil
I’ve loved this movie since the early 70s when I first watched with a girlfriend at her house. As I recall, we watched it more than once - she must have had it on VHS.While I enjoy suspense films, none ever really scare or disturb me. Except this one. Was I just acting out for closer cuddling? I’ll leave that question unanswered! My biggest point in this review is that Doris Day’s performance in Midnight Lace is both extraordinary and SO against her typecast. While she is sweet and wholesome, this role and her excellent portrayal, is not of the ditzy blonde/girl next door.Equally as riveting are the performances of Rex Harrison (definitely NOT your Professor Henry Higgins) and Roddy McDowall. The directing is skillful and deft, and the cinematography equals, if not exceeds, the performances.I waited a long time for this to come out on DVD. I have it on VHS, but my VHS deck isn’t in my system. For years I couldn’t find a DVD copy, at least not at a reasonable price. If you have never seen this film, buy it. If you love it as much as I do, buy this DVD. If you have seen it and don’t like it ... well, you’re wrong! LOL

Doris Day’s best dramatic roll
This is a compelling thriller in Hitchcock style. Doris Day’s very best dramatic roll. After once scene in particular she had a nervous breakdown because it was so horrifying for her. This was the last dramatic film she did. her predicament in this film is terrifying and still quite relevant for today.

Fun suspense movie.
Good production values and acting. Rex Harrison always brings a lot to a role.

Nice thriller
Doris cannot do wrong. Looking real good too. I guessed the culprit in 10 minutes but so what?

Scary Heart Thumping Action with a TWIST
A few may not agree but if you honestly can sit through this flick without your toes or hair curling from the tension, you deserve a mochalatte supreme! I rarely watch this movie but I keep it because Doris Day is so GOOD in it. She will make you feel as terrified as her character could possibly have been. She will convince you she believes she is losing her mind. Usually happy and cheerful, which I really appreciate at midlife and in this less than happy modern world, this twist in her charactype is a real head turner. She is as impossible to ignore here as she was in her role in Love Me or Leave Me. I think Rex is just as odd in his role as she is in hers. No Dr. Doolittle here, I assure you. I think Hitchcock picked them because they were so impossible for the roles yet so versatile as actors that you wouldn't believe it was THEM unless you saw it with your own eyes. It's just an acting marvel that will keep your pulse racing until the last minute. Pick any other two more suitable actors for these roles and this film would be far less memorable. Elegant yet playful Myrna Loy adds that essential realism that is the glue which holds this movie together.

Video quality is " ok "
I've purchased older movies , and they were clear, sharp and great quality. This one, it was " ok ", not the quality I expected.

Still a Goodie!
In its day, "Midnight Lace" was a stylish suspense shocker. As with any of its genre, once you know the twist, it never can have the same impact. But all the elements (the cast, the writing, the luxe London lifestyle that serves as the backdrop) are so first-rate, it still holds up remarkably well. I was disappointed that it would only play on my computer, but was warned of that possibility from the start. I'm surprised this little gem from the early '60s has not found more widespread release on DVD: it's a chestnut, for sure. The cast alone is worth watching: Doris Day (at her dramatic best), Rex Harrison (earning his nickname), Myrna Loy, John Gavin, and even Roddy McDowell in his best unctuous cad mode. Also Herbert Marshall in one of his last screen roles, and Hermione Baddeley doing her best Hermione Baddeley. It's all great fun. If you've never seen (or heard of) it, you're in for a treat. (I only gave it 4 stars as someone who already knew the surprise ending.)

I felt it was well worth the time.
Doris Day did a marvelous job acting out her part. The acting was on believable and the writer kept up the suspense as to the who done it Right up until the end. I felt it was well worth the time.

"Of Course we believe you Doris" MIDNIGHT LACE DVD
This review is for the "The Movie Collection DORIS DAY" DVD. The DVD is 16.9 ratio (fills my entire TV Screen), the colour is good with clear sound and optional English subtitles. No Extras (but a very reasonable price!). The film - Well it's a glossy Universal thriller with all the stops out as The studio were so good at producing. Set in a Hollywood London with some second unit location filming, the film is very much a version of a play in that there are only basically4/5 sets. The apartment Day and her husband Rex Harrison live in could easily accomodate my house 4 or 5 times, and the pub has customers leave their money on the table (my wife said maybe they were leaving a tip!!), But I nit pick. This is a good mystery well filmed and acted (if slightly OTT by Doris towards the end, but OK she is going through a rather bad time!). There is a slight problem that probably if you have seen the film once you will know the end. I have seen it 3 or 4 times over the years and still enjoy it a lot. If you have never seen it do give it a go!

Surprisingly good!
I thought this would be a funny rather corny film but it was exciting and dark. Doris Day was totally credible. Clark Gable was the only dud elememt being horribly miscast!

day was ace
it was a good film and the actors very professional but Doris played a very hysterical woman who didn't give enough thought to who was tormenting her or why. it left me feeling anxious. at least she came off ok in the end.
