If you loved Because of Winn-Dixie, you’ll love this book!
I’ve been wanting to read this book for a very long time, and so glad I did! I’m glad that I read it a little at a time to really drink in Alice’s story. Beautifully written from the point of view of almost-11-year-old Alice Ann, whose unexpected friendship with her neighbor Miss Millie challenges and changes Alice’s thinking. Caught up in her own problems and hopes, Alice develops empathy and strength of character through her walks and talks with Miss Millie. I loved this book - no spoilers, but this book does deal with themes of grief, loss, prejudice, and the impact of segregation. Tamara Bundy has written a story with serious themes, yet it never feels too heavy or complex for younger readers. Full of hope and heart, it’s a perfect book for fans of Because of Winn-Dixie, and would make a great class read-aloud (although I could not read it without crying).

Historical Fiction Heartprint
Wonderful historical fiction for middle grade readers! Such a great read! Kids will be transported back to 1968 & learn a little about history and a lot about life. Hopefully, some Miss Millie's wisdom will stay in their hearts; "But maybe the most important thing is for people to just be kind." Kids will definitely connect with Alice as she tries to navigate family & friendship woes after her move to Rainbow, Georgia.Reminded me a lot of some of my favorite Kate DiCamillo stories. A little bit of Because of Winn Dixie & a little bit of Raymie Nightingale. Preorder this book as it will be released on July 4th! Excellent middle grade read for grades 4&up.* I was sent an ARC for an honest review. Ha e since purchased four copies for my classroom library.

A beautiful book about friendship
A beautiful book about friendship, family and moving on.Ten, almost eleven, year old Alice's family moves from Ohio to Georgia to take care of her grandmother whose memory is failing. Set in the 60s, Alice's mistake of listening in on her neighbor's party line call, has her heading over to apologize and make amends as requested by her mother. Her neighbor Miss Millie is a 90+ year old black woman living in a white neighborhood that hasn't been exactly warm and welcoming to her. Alice's apology and offer to help becomes a daily dog walk with Miss Millie. The walks are filled with love and life lessons as a deep friendship grows between these unlikely friends. Fantastic historical fiction book for middle grade readers.

Not good enough!
My daughter is an avid reader, but she never finished this book. I am trying to say that it was boring because I did not read it myself. What I am trying to say is that the book is possibly boring because she refused to finish it.

Learn about people of diverse ages and races, but also a bit of history too.
I volunteer in both an elementary school library and a middle school library so am exposed to many wonderful books for children. This book is one of the best I have read! The story is about relationships, between a little girl and her parents, a friend, and an elderly lady who lives next door. It also is about race relations as the little girl is white and the neighbor is black. I highly recommend the book. My 12-year old grandson, who primarily reads books about sports, loved this book, even though its main character is a girl! Like one of its themes, this book crosses generational lines and appeals to all.

This is an incredibly sweet story that is filled with perspective and life lessons. It will be an easy recommendation to anyone who enjoys reading about bits of history, friendships in seemingly unlikely places, and the heartfelt realities of growing up.

Exellent
Excellent book, excellently written. It describes brilliantly that skin colour, age or sex can not be boundery for friendship. I bought the book for my 11 year old. I recommend it.
