VERY ENJOYABLE AND FUN TO WATCH
This was a wonderful tale of an old gentleman and his dear friends. I found every bit of this production enjoyable. The costumes were perfect, and the characters well portrayed by some wonderful actors. You have to give this production a watch to the end!

Hilarious
I don't know how anyone would like this series. Mr Jingle was my favorite character.

Didn't like at all.
I can't believe the glowing reviews of this series. I lasted less than 15 minutes. IMHO it fails on every level. In the audio, some sections were so low I had to crank the volume and two seconds later it was so loud I had to crank it back down. The acting was terrible. It was suited far more to a stage production than a movie. Even the outfits looked like Halloween costumes. The video is grainy, but that is most certainly because of the year it was filmed. It has not aged well.

Fun. Not quite Mr. Toad's Wild Ride. Some good historical commentary
Not up there with other BBC period pieces, but a good bit of fun, and the sequence in the prison sheds light on Dicken's view of how incarceration doesn't work (well put in the words of Sam Weller). For something as filled with dialog as Dickens, there seem to be an awful lot of slow travel and other lengthy moments (sort of like, well, we rented this carriage and four horses, so we need to film a lot of it). Wish there had been more character development with that talented cast, especially Clive Swift. Sam Weller and Mr. Jingle steal the scenes.Had some trouble streaming it, the video quality was on the blurry side.

Two Stars
I would rather see Chaucer's tales. These are downright silly.

Nonsensical dialogue probably was clever in the book version but not in this
The picture & sound quality are poor. The script does not convey what is obviously supposed to be a wit & double entendres that act as fuel for the story, however here they are looped together on one long incomprehensible string which will confound anyone who has not read the book. The accents & sound quality will exasperate the non British ear & have you searching for the subtitles. If you come at this clueless, having never read the book, then , even if you love Dickens, you probably should not attempt watching this. We've watched quite a few of Dicken's works, but found this unwatchable.

Jolly good!
So entertaining with excellent cast members. I enjoyed it so much I watched it twice and expect to watch it many more times in the future. This is how period pieces should be done. Most moviemakers seem to concentrate on sex and violence when depicting historic eras which is so annoying. I would recommend this as a PG watch and so intelligently done with good people staying true to their beliefs and hoping to find the best in others even when they have done wrong. This was Charles Dickens's first novel written when he was 24 years old.

Very Well Done
The Pickwick Papers is one of my favorite books. I just recently found this adaptation of the book and wow did they do a good job.It seems strange to me that there have not been more versions of this story-- then again, this one is pretty near perfect.

Fun for Dickens' fans
I enjoyed this so much I watched it in one sitting. It's naturally got some aspects that are dated because recording methods have changed since then. The same is true of some of the acting performances but overall the characters are full of the spirit of Dickens and the plot gallops along in an entertaining manner. I've not read Pickwick Papers but was amazed how familiar many of the characters are so it's probably a good introduction to the writing itself.

Classic Dickens - Well Acted.
I have the wonderful 1952 film version, with James Hayter as Pickwick and I think this BBC adaptation is as good because the whole serial lasts 6 hours and is able to cover more of The Pickwick Club adventures.Strong performances by Nigel Stock (Pickwick), Patrick Malahide (Mr Jingle), Clive Swift (Tracy Tupman), Jeremy Nicholas (Mr. Winkle), Alan Parnaby (Mr. Snodgrass) and Phil Daniels ( Micky Pierce in Fools And Horses) as Sam Weller.Good period sets, gentle humour and all nicely narrated by Ray Brooks. My version has Dutch subtitles , which cannot be removed - but you get used to them after a few episodes.

Subtitles easily removed and a joy to watch.
This was bought to replace a Video tape version and is a Dutch import though the actors have not been dubbed and it is subtitled in Dutch these are easily taken of screen you start your DVD and go to your subtitles button on your handset and turn them of this worked on my player so should be pretty universal (you could have to go into your tv menu on some sets) this Pickwick Papers is well produced well acted lots of fun and something all of the family can enjoy.

Well worth Picking!
Within the usual constraints of rendering the whole a book to film this is a very enjoyable show. The choice of actors is excellent as one has come to expect from British television. I had some doubts about the ability of anyone to adequately portray Sam Weller but Phil Daniels was equal to the task but this is not to take anything away from the rest of the cast all of whom were excellent.

Enjoyable.
I probably did watch this first time round but could not really remember it. Having just re-read the book I decided to buy this. Really good version. Nigel Stock as Mr Pickwick, Phil Daniels as Sam and Patrick Malahide as Mr Jingle in particular are spot on in what is a slightly 'small staged' production. Perhaps that is why they didn't include the skating scene!
