Q: can it pump directly from a shallow well for cows?

this pump can only pull a prime of about 10-ft Dry, and will Wet Prime at 20-ft. You should have some type of Strainer on your Suction Line.

Q: Is the unit ignition protected and thus safe to be installed in the bilge of a gas powered boat?

I do not believe that it is a explosion proof motor so I would say probably not. I would contact the manufacture directly for the final answer though.

Q: Every time i turn on the tap the pump comes on. What is causing this.

High flow. Sounds like you have a lot of water coming from your tap. If the pump is not running when the tap is off then you don't likely have any problems with the pump or pressure tank. A small flow such as a drinking fountain would not cause the pump to come on every time but most other water fixtures would. Pressure will be higher at first and will begin to lessen before the pump kicks on and steadily raises pressure. If the pump turns off at the same time you turn the water off every time then you may have a pressure tank problem.
