Helping Children Deal with Death through Story
Explaining death to children is a difficult process, and LindaBoyden's book, The Blue Roses, helps soften the blow and givesyoungsters faith that life goes on, sometimes in mysterious ways. I sent copies of this book to my young nephews and nieces(ages 5-8)after their favorite uncle died. If anyone has achild who questions the death of a loved one, this book is theanswer. The story is beautifully written and the accompanyingartwork is a perfect match for this well-told tale.

Lessons Learned in Grandfather's Garden
Blue Roses by Linda Boyden is a story about a Native American family and their garden. Boyden introduces us to a young girl, Rosalie, and her grandfather. These two have a special relationship. Rosalie’s grandfather uses the garden to help her understand nature’s life cycle. On her 9th birthday, Rosalie asks her grandfather for a blue rose. She is disappointed when she learns that is not possible. A short time later, grandfather passes away. Rosalie is heartbroken and finds comfort in continuing to care for grandfather’s garden. Every time she works in the garden she feels connected to her grandfather. The love they shared when they garden helps Rosalie to cope with her loss. Boyden does a great job helping children to understand the concept of death and grieving.

Blue Roses (hardcover) Review
Despite what movies portray, there is no magic fairy dust to bring a loved one back once they have passed away and good books which help children understand and deal with a family member's death are extremely important. Linda Boyden's "Blue Roses" is a great book. After the loss of my daughter's grandfather, we used this book to help her cope with the loss of Grampa Bill. Linda's gentle yet well crafted words helped us to cry and smile and dream about our favorite grandfather. My daughter also loved Amy Cordova's simple yet, lively illustrations. This book was taken to school for "sharing" by my daughter who talked about her grandpa and she continues to refer to it as "Grampa's book". We would gladly recommend "Blue Roses" to everyone who has a young family member who has experienced a loss in the family.

A Touching Story
What a touching tale. Linda Boyden does a masterful job of addressing a very difficult issue. Grieving is a challenge for anyone, but especially for those who are young. Boyden writes in a way that is uplifting, sensitive, and encouraging. Beautiful artwork, coupled with equally beautiful language, makes "The Blue Roses" an excellent choice for anybody, but especially for someone who wants to assist young readers as they gain understanding regarding life and death.
