Xaphoon-a-mania
The xaphoon has amazingly big sound for a small instrument. It sounds like a tenor saxaphone. It makes learning a reed instrument fun. The semi-transparent color is very striking when back lit. I love it!

Best for those with experience playing clarinet, sax, etc.
This is a cute instrument for anyone with some experience playing a reed instrument, such as a clarinet (even if that experience was decades ago, as it was in my case). It sounds more like a clarinet than a sax, and in fact it is very much like the chalameau, the precursor of the clarinet. Basic fingerings are similar, but not identical, to those of the recorder. The first octave and a half are fairly easy to play (for those with reed experience), the higher few note are more troublesome. Practice, practice, practice.... One can find a lot of music on the web and elsewhere that fit its range, including some duets. It is really quite small, so will travel well in a backpack or carry-on.All in all, a useful little instrument. But please be warned: This is not an instrument that is really easy to play. It is not like an ocarina. If you are not a reed player, learning to play the Xaphoon will take some time and dedication.

I'm really sorry I wasted my money on it and a box of reeds ...
I can barely get any sound of this. I taught myself to play an alto sax. This is quite another musical device. I'm really sorry I wasted my money on it and a box of reeds for the tenor sax.

I have no experience with Reed instruments and was able to produce a tone in 10 minutes.
I spent roughly 4 minutes trying to produce tone without looking at the readme booklet. Then roughly 3 minutes looking at the booklet. Then roughly 3 minutes before I finally produced a clarinet like tone.I was very appreciative that there was a already a reed attached to the instrument out-of-box. If I had needed to deal with logistics of proper reed placement... I would have much less confidence to produce a first tone. Knowing (expecting) that the reed was properly placed meant I had one less thing to worry about when attempting to create the tone. Having no experience with reeds... I was exceedingly thankful for this.Playing a C scale with flattened 7th (Myxolydian) is pretty straight forward. There's a youtube video which will help you do that.So... I could play a first scale (reasonably) within 30 minutes. Now I'll need to spend many more months before I can actually make music. :)I love how small the instrument is. Not exactly pocket sized... but certainly more pocketable than a soprano saxophone.
