Vitruvius: 'Ten Books on Architecture' Revised Edition

One book contains the 10 books written by Vitruvius. Excellent gift for an architecte who desires more than the mediocre architecture we have nowadays.

Very informational and quite candid, funny how Roman's thought that being an architect took little knowledge. Quote from the book,"If thy son be dull witted make him a page or an architect ".

After watching the British TV program it was imperative to purchase this book. I intend to replicate some of the ancient processes. An amazing man this Vitruvius.

I think this is the only recent translation available. I do have some complaints though. The standard translation is Morgan, about a century old. He uses terminology which is probably somewhat obsolete today, but on other accounts he is greatly preferable. Example:Morgan: The testudinate is used where the span is not great.Rowland: Covered interiors are made where there are no great stresses on the building.So, with Rowland you do not have to figure out what the damn testudinate is, but I am afraid her translation completely misses the point of that sentence. Morgan's book also has handy floor plans of Pompeii houses to illustrate the text. With Rowland, I had to get a separate book on Pompeii and only then I was in a position to appreciate what is written.Also, I have the Kindle version, and if I want to read it on a non-Kindle device, the pictures cannot be enlarged. Which is, in the case of this particular book, a severe handicap. All in all, in retrospect I find this translation hard to recommend.

Th Ten Books are a must for every architecture student. I must confess I did not read it all at the time of my first year...But Vitruvius' masterpiece on architecture is definitely a must read.
