Q: Can this be used on 316 stainless steel

No. I just tried, and the tap shattered after about five revolutions in (with cutting fluid).

Q: The description first says these are rethreading dies, but then says they are cutting dies. Are they good cutting dies?

So far, cut very well, but then, not a lot of use as is in College Sculpture Studio. Did not get them for rethreading. Impressive set. Only problem as someone else pointed out is set of dies in its tray sits over the taps. And the tray is thin, flexible plastic, so when you lift off, it sags. Now you can imagine students don't put it back, or drop it. Suppose could fit tray in lid and just leave open.

I see what you mean they do bounce around a bit . Great tool though has worked perfectly for me already . the inside plastic tray is weak but everything to do with the tool is perfect

An overall chromium coating of 86pcs improves the corrosion resistance of the generally used through-hardening bearing steel. The cost of the Chromium coating is very high.
