Introduction to Radioactive Minerals
A nice book with Plenty of pictures of Radioactive Minerals. Most people do not have a way to detect if they have minerals that are radioactive. Nor do they want the minerals in the home. Here a collector can see what they look like.Having a listing of Locals for various minerals is also a very handy Item to those who are going rock collecting. If you are in the general area of some sources those interested could go seek out a nice sample for their collection The 6 page appendix called Checklist of Radioactive Minerals includes what group the are in, The Chemical Formula, Color and UV Fluorescent color. For those collecting radioactive minerals it is a much needed Listing. I think those interested in Rock collecting can really enjoy the information and the way it is presented in this book. A good resource for any rock collector.

Very beautiful images and graphs also
I am studying various books on the subject at the same time. What I have read thru from Content on is well written on this subject, extremely interesting and held my interest deeply. I definitely am looking forward into getting more out of this book.Very beautiful images and graphs also.

Great introduction to the subject .
I was looking for an introduction to a complex subject and found this ideal .I have been collecting micro minerals of Uranium and this book has helped me to identify and understand the chemistry of them .The photos are excellent and are a great aid to identifying radioactive specimens .The book is well worth adding to your geology library .

Nice pictures but that's about it
I don't see where other reviews claim this book is helpful in collecting items. Very skimpy descriptions of where the ore is located and some major locations are left out completely. The pictures are very pretty, but that's about it.

interesting overview of radioactive minerals
a little short on descriptions, short on thorium minerals and could have some better pictures, particualrly the UV ones, but overall happy with it

Right to the last detail
Great photography. Explains the subject in great detail. Is great for finding collecting locales. Covers common sense safety precautions. One should have a good basic knowledge of rocks and minerals and the collecting hobby before jumping into this book. Is an advanced subject that requires careful study and caution in pursuing.

Radioactive Minerals
This large format, 144 page book is written by an expert and gives excellent coverage of all of the radioactive minerals likely to be encountered by mineral collectors. Fine quality, coloured photographs from the author's own collection are included on virtually every page. Early chapters address the the chemistry and formation of the minerals. Two appendices list 214 mineral types and, for the mineral collector who wishes to gather his own material in the field, 289 locations in 36 countries world-wide.If you collect radioactive minerals you are unlikely to find a more informative book than this one on the minerals themselves. My only niggling criticism is that the book does not address radioactivity, per se, or safety and the potential risk, i.e. how to measure the level of radioactivity and compare this with the recommended maximum exposure levels.

Good first attempt on an Introduction, but a lot to be made better
In general this book is good as an Introduction to radioactive minerals. It covers the formation, localities and the minerals itself. It is thus quite broad, and the only book of which I know that covers the wordlwide occurence of uranium and thorium minerals. It makes a good attempt to illustrate a wide range of the described minerals, but in my opinion it fails. The worst aspect of it all is that, although the minerals shown are exclusively specimens of the author's collection, which covers a very wide range of specimens, the photos are exceptionally bad. They miss all standards of high class mineral photography (compare, for example: Gregor Markl and Stephan Wolfsried: Das Uran von Menzenschwand). The images are sometimes blurred, badly illuminated and contain almost no information on the size. The text contains only minor mistakes, but I highly recommend the author to get a professional photographer involved, because otherwise this very good attempt on introducing these interesting and unique minerals will catch nobodies attention. The appendix and bibliography are quite good though. In my opinion this is a work with a great potential to grow. I personally would also like to see graphics of the crystall structures. I am aware that it would then be more than an "introduction", but I see the potential of it becoming a real "compendium".
