Q: do these couplers work manually?

I'm not sure what you mean by "manually". We used the two replacement couplers that came with our package to fix broken ones, and they look and work identical to the couplers that were originally on the trains, and have functioned properly. We do not have a decoupler, so we don't know if they would work with one, but if the original couplers did, I don't see why these wouldn't. They do couple if the cars are backed up into each other after being separated. Not sure we helped much.

Q: Are these compatible with the bachman amtrak acela set? it came with plastic couplers and one broke. these would be preferable if they work. thanks.

These are under shank couplers. They raise the knuckle up. I think you would want center shank for the Acela. You might want to check the kadee web site for a conversion chart

I think Medium center shank would work for you.
